Research Project
Over the course of the semester, you have been exposed to a number of different elements
regarding Visual Communication. We’ve touched on everything from theories, to philosophies,
to perspectives – over a variety of different topics. This project is about finding one area that you
want to learn far more about than the class time or format allows. Choose an example of Visual
Communication that appeals to you – it could be a genre (e.g. horror movies, television sitcoms,
commercials, website design etc.), a specific example (e.g. a specific movie, a specific magazine
advertisement, a billboard, or whatever), a philosophy of Visual Communication applied to
various examples, or almost any other topic related to Visual Communication. The boundaries of
this assignment are fairly wide open, as long as 1). You use some form of visual example to be
analyzed, 2). You apply concepts from the class, 3). You write a university level piece of
analysis. Analysis means that this is not simply a report. Don’t just look some things up and
repeat them. You want to apply points and research to whatever it is you’re analyzing, and draw
conclusions about it.
✓ The paper should be written in 12 pt. “Times New Roman” font (The printing on this
sheet is Times New Roman 12 pt.). The writing should be double spaced, but without
“Creative Spacing” (skipping lines between paragraphs etc.). Use 1” margins on all sides.
✓ Your name should appear on the top, upper left hand line of the paper. On the same line,
but on the right hand side it should have “COMM 300.” No other information should be
included. The paper should be stapled in the upper left. No title pages. No folders or
binding. No page numbers. The paper should be 7 – 8 pages long.
✓ You should also support your points and conclusions with quoted research with in-text
citations. Use a minimum of four quality sources (NO Wikipedia!). You will need a
correct bibliography. The bibliography does not count toward the length of the paper.
Bibliography formats are at the library reference desk if needed.
