CHIN 151 University of California Spring Silkworms Book Analytical Paper Final paper instructions has been posted on the main page of our course on CCLE. It is my suggestion that you choose to expand one of your previousresponse paper. By “expand,” i don’t mean write another couple pages to add to it. Since this is a longer analytical paper to show your more in-depth understanding of a literary work, you will need to revise, refine your central argument, and reorganize and add new selected paragraphs for close reading, to make your argument. “Expand” also does not mean adding plot summary, background intro of the author or the work that is not serving to make your argument. This is a place to deepen your argument and organize your analysis accordingly, in more of a research paper manner. C151
Instructions for final paper
Due dates: noon on Sunday, Dec.15.
Please write an analytical paper on a text we’ve discussed so far. The length will be 8 pages, 12’
font, double spaced
An analytical paper will be a place to show your in-depth understanding of a piece of literature
and the key questions arising from it, your ability to address its position in the proper historical
and cultural contexts and, if necessary, its relation with other similar texts. You are advised to
consult lecture notes or scholarly works to understand its cultural context, its significance, and
some major discussions around it or its author. Based on your research, you should generate a
central argument to your paper about the literary work, and organize your close reading and
analysis in a logical manner to convince readers of your argument,
Key questions you may ask to brainstorm your argument include:
-What is the main problem or issue that the author is addressing?
-What is the author’s central claim, argument, or point?
-What kind of new literary/aesthetic experience does it bring?
– who’s its imagined readers?
-Is there a social or political agenda behind it?
-Why are the problem(s) and the argument(s) interesting or important given their social and
cultural contexts?
Please DO NOT write long summary of the story or autobiographical essay. You should also
avoid subjective description of what you feel, e.g. you like or dislike of the text. Please also
indicate in footnote or endnote if you are directly quoting or paraphrasing others’ ideas.
