Cal Poly Pomona Future of Mechanical Engineering Water Treatment Design Paper 1- Manufacturing Competitiveness in the USA 2- Future of Mechanical Engineering Design choose one of them and write 20 pages that include appendix and everything. come up with some interviews — I’m in Ohio , US Senior Seminar Report General Guidelines
Why are we doing it?
This team report was originally conceived as a need to fulfill some of the educational outcomes, outlined in the table below
that are required in the accreditation process overseen by ABET, an organization that accredits/certifies University of Akron
engineering degrees. When you complete your engineering education there will be, in spite of the great professors you
have had, some areas that are lacking. It is the intent of this course to fill in some of these under-emphasized areas (see
arrows below).
What is the Senior Seminar Report?
The point of our effort this semester is to see if we can make some headway toward a conclusion about this topic. Our aim
is to draft an original position paper on this issue of that includes a discussion on Societal, Legal, Environmental and Design
/Technology Implications. This is the type of issue if you were writing a white paper as a consultant. It would also be a valid
study for engineers working for startup, other company that has an economic stake in cutting edge technology serving
societal needs.
You will be responsible for forming your own teams. You and your team will research and write a comprehensive report on
a mechanical engineering topic that is current. Past year topics have ranged from Water Desalination, Impact of
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and Autonomous Cars. This team need not be the same team as the one you have for your
Community service project. This project has been carefully selected because it not only requires the use of basic design
methodology and engineering technology, but requires the appreciation of:
Creativity
Consideration and Interaction of Design & Costs
Consideration of Environmental Impact
Consideration of Political Realities / Legal Frameworks
Consideration of Alternative Solutions
Consideration of the Societal Impact of Decisions /Ecological Impacts
The completion of the project will require submission of a formal report (double-spaced, 12-point font) not including
appendices. While this will be a team report, each person in the group is responsible for various sections of the report that
you choose to investigate. All students on a team will get a similar grade for the main part of the report but I reserve the
right to give individual students in groups a higher grade if they have done an exceptional job on the professional interview
portion (more on that requirement below).
How much work is expected?
I expect that research and writing for individual sections (1/person) will take between 4-6 hours adequately referenced.
Interview and interview reporting on the template provided should take no more than 1-2 hours.
How much is the senior report worth?

Academic Misconduct:
It is considered Academic Misconduct (i.e., cheating) to:
1. Get help from anyone other than the instructor or your team on any assignment that will be turned in for a grade
2. Any form of plagiarism (properly cite quotes, references, etc.).
If you are caught cheating in this class, we will pursue discipline through whatever avenues are available via University
policies. You should read the College and University resolutions on academic misconduct. They are on the university
website.
2019 SENIOR SEMINAR REPORT TOPICS
Based on student feedback, you and your group will pick one of two topics of current interest to mechanical engineers for
INDUSTRIAL use (not home or consumer use):
1.
2.
Manufacturing Competitiveness in the USA
Future of Mechanical Engineering Design
The point of our effort this semester is to see if we can make some headway toward a conclusion about your chosen topic.
Our aim is to draft an original position paper on this issue of that includes a detailed research and discussion on
Societal/Ethical, Legal, Environmental and Design /Technology Implications. This is the type of issue you would deal with if
you were an leader /engineer working with a company wanting to use the technology to innovate and expand their product
offering, or improve their efficiency in design or production. It would also be a valid study for engineers working for
startup, other company that has an economic stake in cutting edge technology serving societal needs.
Read the following before getting started:
1.
2.
3.
TEAM: Choose ONE of the above major topics for your team (you cannot work on both topics) and each student in
group can work on one subtopic of interest. One of team members must pick overview topic listed below. You
must work as a team to integrate the final product into a coherent report with summary and conclusions. Each
subtopic can be a chapter in the report. If you have less 5 members in a group, you are allowed to combine
subtopics, provided you have an appropriate subtitled Chapter.
RESEARCH PORTION : Each of the student in the group picks one of the following sub areas for more detailed
exploration (5-6 pages/person that includes references, 1-2 pictures allowed):
a. Overall view of the state of the art of the technology with good references, background info
b. Engineering Challenges, Evolution of technology i.e. aspects of design, quality, reliability etc.
c. Economic implications (cost benefits) and it’s impact on industrial savings using chosen technology
d. Legal implications of the chosen technology including product liability issues etc.
e. Environmental implications and impacts of the chosen technology
f. Government and Regulatory implications of the chosen technology
g. Other relevant sub topics also acceptable E.g. Influence of modern design methods or materials on the
technology, Societal Implications, Ethical, safety implications of using the technology
INTERVIEWS & NETWORKING: Each student in the group will interview 1-2 people (minimum 1) in the industry
who are users to discuss their chosen sub-topic at length using open ended questions and integrate /summarize
their information in the chapter subtopic along with their interview template. For example, if you are talking to a
product manager at a company you may want to ask questions like:
a. Tell me more about your company’s involvement with XXX technology ? Where do you use it currently?
b. Example Legal Question: What are the legal implications of designing or manufacturing a product using
XXX technology for manufacture, assembly or testing? (the use of replacement parts made by 3-D printing
or the use of robots to assemble products are good topics).
c. Example Environmental Questions: What are the challenges faced by companies who use XXX technology
? Are there environmental implications for disposal or usage etc. ?
d. Example Governmental or Regulatory Issues: Are there any governmental or other issues in using the XXX
technology for products ( the use of 3-D printing to make final aerospace parts is an example).
e. Ethical and Political Implications: What are the societal or political implications of using technology to
reduce workforce ? Example using robots/automation?
As you can see, you have wide lattitude in choosing a topic of interest to you, but also you have great choice in
interviewing people. For example you can conduct detailed interviews on your SUBTOPIC:
o Manufacturing design engineers who work in companies that heavily use XXX technology (e.g.
automotive or aerospace, or design firms)
o Lawyers working for companies (general counsel)
CEO’s, CTO’s (Chief Technology Officers) on their view of industry and implications
Government officials on regulatory and environmental issues E.g. OSHA officials on safety!
Distributors and Manufacturers of XXX Technology in Ohio (we have several 3_D printing
companies, and companies that use robots).
IMPORTANT: The interview should be non-trivial i.e. substantial. Suggested interview time should be between 2060 minutes. You must ask relevant questions, and get good answers that address your chosen subtopic at length.
This is a serious exercise where you are expected to learn new knowledge through networking and outreach
efforts. You must LIST your contact, their position, industry and their email address unless there are serious
privacy concerns ( you can get an exception from me). You must explain who you talked to and why they were a
relevant interview subject.

Do’s and Don’ts of a good interview:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
Do interview people in person (first preference), or by video call (2nd preference) or phone call (3rd preference)
Do NOT interview people by email or by any written communication.
Do find the relevant industry where the chosen technology is being used or is serious consideration
Do set up interviews ahead of time and prepare open ended questions. Be prepared to make 3-5 calls at least!
Do be prepared to follow up statements made by interviewees: e.g.. if somebody says: “We used Robots but it
did not work out” .. Be prepared to ask “ Tell me more… why did it not work out? What would make you use
robots again? Etc.” If an interviewee says “ We use 3-D printing for prototyping..” Ask why, advantages and
disadvantages, how does it affect the overall process. What are the future implications etc.
Do NOT interview people who have no information or cannot comment substantially on the topic. The people
bring interviewed must bring relevant knowledge to the topic..preferably they are professionals- they need
not be technologists or engineers! For example talking to a workplace compensation lawyer who has handled
a case involving injury from robots or automation would be a person to get a great interview.
Do allow the interview to be free format, and often ask “why”, and ask people to explain the reasoning behind
their thinking. Each interview page completed must list team members involved at the top of the page
Interview Template ( 1 / student), should be attached at the end of each section in the report. Can be two pages or more.
