Choose a subject from the following list. Your paper should fulfill the
minimum of the 1,000 words of original writing by students required
from every lower division General Education course. Your papers must
include an introduction and conclusion and be well constructed.
1. Etruscan and Roman Art
A. How did techniques, styles, and conventions of Roman
portraiture change over time? Why was portraiture of elders,
statesmen, and others important to Roman society? Track the
development of portraits from the Roman Republic, through the
Early Empire, and into the late Empire. Give examples.
OR
B. Compare and contrast the style, medium, and iconography of
Augustus of Primaporta and Equestrian Statue of Marcus Aurelius.
Give examples for all the answers below as well.
2. Jewish, Early Christian and Byzantine Art
A. Discuss the iconographic motifs that developed during the
Early Christian period for representing events from the Life of
Christ. And how do Classical themes and symbols continue to
be incorporated into Christian art and architecture?

B. What is the significance of mosaic work in the Early, Middle and
late periods of Byzantine Art? Identify chief examples and
Pictorial conventions (subjects, images, design elements).
This is a research paper. Multiple references are required for this paper.
Minimum of three (3) references are considered responsive for this
paper. Please use books or journal articles. Web sources are not
allowed. You can paraphrase and reference your textbook. If there are
not any authors or page numbers available, do not use that material.
Please cite properly for your writing and photographs. Check out our
library on campus.
All papers must be typed using Times New Roman or Arial font, double
spaced, with standard 1” (inch) margins and must be proofread before
submitting. You must use 12-point font. Do not add extra spaces
between paragraphs.
In your paper work you must include at least three (3) different
artworks and attach a printed depiction of each work discussed, Black
and white prints are fine. At least 4×6 inch prints, please. Staple
pictures at the end of your paper.
Do not cite video documentaries, movies, television shows, podcasts or
any other electronic medium. Remember to cite all biographical
information.
Your typed papers must be turned in directly by you (no email
papers). Your paper should be stapled on the top left corner. No
folders, plastic inserts or other retaining materials are allowed.
No late research paper will be accepted without penalty. A late
paper will automatically lose 10% of points when submitted after
the deadline. Research papers will be collected when class session
starts. If you turn in the assignment during or after our class
session will automatically be late and will receive a 10%
deduction.
No papers will be accepted after December 10th and will be assigned “0”
points.
