Information Report Topic: Mechanical Engineering
Learning about various concepts related to your field of study can be a daunting task. New and
updated information is frequently introduced into your discipline’s ever-growing body of
literature. Maintaining a current knowledge of this information can impact your career success
and your reputation in the field.
Assume that you are a member of an introductory course in your field of study. The professor
would like each class member to be well-grounded in the discipline, so he or she has decided that
the class will publish an electronic manual that can be read by current and future students to
learn all about various topics related to the discipline. Each subsequent semester, the manual will
be updated by future students, so everyone can easily access the most recent materials.
You’ll write your information report to current and future class members, and the electronic
manual will be available in PDF format on the course Web site.

Working on Your Survey
Now that you’ve chosen a topic for your data analysis report, your next task
is working on the survey you’ll use to gather information, specifically writing
the survey question and four responses. (Note: If you proposed your own
topic, go to the next Web page in this lesson. It will be a dropbox where you
can submit the topic proposal form. Do not move on to the next lesson until
after you have heard back from me about whether or not your proposed
topic has been accepted.)
If you chose one of the already-approved topic, let’s look at an example of
a survey topic, survey question, and survey responses, and then read some
guidelines about writing your question and responses.
Sample Topic
A few years ago, the new Polsky Building Food Court opened its operations,
but Food Opoerations wants to know if people in the Polsky Building are
satisfied with the service in order to determine whether changes are
needed. Assume that you have been asked to collect and interpret data
regarding opinions about the food court, followed by a written report of your
conclusions.
Survey Question and Four Responses
The following survey question and four responses were written for the
sample topic:
What is your opinion about the new Polsky Building Food Court?
• Satisfied
More Satisfied than Dissatisfied
More Dissatisfied than Satisfied
• Dissatisfied
Analysis of Survey Question and Responses
Read the following information about the sample survey question and
responses. They will provide guidance for you as you consider writing your
own survey question and responses for the data analysis topic you chose.
Survey Question:
• Notice how the question is not biased in any way.
• For example, the question asks people what their opinion is about the
food court.
• A biased question might ask one of the following:
How much do you like the Polsky Building Food Court?
How satisfied are you with the Polsky Building Food Court?
• Both questions are biased, because they assume or lead people to
assume) that some level of liking or satisfaction already exists.
Four Responses:
• Notice how the responses cover a wide but equally spaced range of
opinions.
• Notice how each response is clearly different from one another.
Notice how the response “No Opinion” is not listed.
Don’t include “No Opinion as one of your survey responses; it doesn’t
provide you with any useful information.
• Notice how the responses are designed to gather categorical data, not
numerical data.
Topic:
• Notice how the topic doesn’t ask for student’ opinions. Instead, it asks
for the opinions of people in the Polsky Building (e.g., students, faculty,
staff, visitors).
• If the survey required you to gather only student opinions, you would
have needed to add the following question at the beginning of the
survey: Are you a student? (Responses: Yes or No)
• Keep in mind that your survey may require a pre-survey question.
