Chinese Migration to the US
Through this article Wei Li explains how there were Chinese immigrants who were
attracted to the suburban lifestyle and the business possibilities, they leaned more towards the
bigger cities. These people were the ones who had in ind of coming to the US fr success. They
came with a plan to either get educated or start a business of their own. The San Gabriel valley
was a popular place for many to settle down. Chinese population increased from around 33,000
in the 1970’s to 260,000 by 1999. This is a significant amount of growth for a particular area in
the Los Angeles county. Wei Li mentions how the number of banks have also increased within
the San Gabriel area. There has been a demand for business to grow and banks have not being
accessible. According to his writing he states, “According to FDIC data, Chinese-American
banks absorbed more deposits from their branches in concentrated Chinese residential
neighborhoods than from their other branches. This was especially true in the western and
eastern parts of the San Gabriel Valley…” The community has helped the economy grow within
their area. I believe one of the main reasons is their level of comfortability. Whenever new
immigrants come over, they usually tend to live close to people from their same country. For this
reason the Chinese community has grown in number around the San Gabriel valley, they feel
better taken care of and are able to provide opportunities for themselves.
Wei Li article does an excellent job portraying how the banks and the Chinese
community are closely related to one another. From the beginning of Chinese moving to the US,
to them forming communities, to having banks specialized within their community.
Through Wei li’s article we can understand how the Chinese immigrants would settle down in
places where they felt most like home. Through the subtle settlement many became accustomed
to living among their same race that they began on creating their own communities. Many of the
Chinese population came to the US I search of a better life through education or starting their
own buisness. They had in mind to come and be successful. Despite their hard work and
contributing to society, many felt that they were taking away jobs for Americans. Through the
hardships the Chinese were willing to work harder than the European-american.
The United States were calling to the Chinese people to help put together the railroads of
America. They were using the Chinese labor due to their cheap pay and their hard work. The
United States exploited them and once they were done using them the Chinese began to settle
down in different places throughout the US. In the late 1800’s they were highly needed and
appreciated for all the hard work they would provide to help build the tracks all across the United
States.
After america didn’t have the need for the Chinese they felt threaten. The white folks felt
like the Chinese were taking their jobs away and wanted to get rid of them. After their
persistence of fighting against the Chinese, the United States finally came up with the Chinese
exclusion act. In the 1882, it was known as the “Chinese restriction act”. They reserved the
“exclusion” part for the 1889 successor law. Through this law it prevented the entry of new
incoming Chinese people. As of this time the majority of Chinese were blue collar males, they
wanted to bring over their families over but became problematic when the law was passed.
Once the white European’s excluded them from the country the Chinese began to spread
out into different parts of the country. They spread thin and ended up in places in which they can
improve their living circumstances. Many settled down in places where they were able to have
better opportunities. By this time the Chinese were migrating to the United States for buisness
and educational opportunities.
Throughout this entire time the Chinese have been fighting back for their right to stay
within the United States. They have resisted and have found ways in which to stay or come in.
Through education, the Chinese took the opportunity and students were coming in with StudentVisas. However this quickly became a side-door in which many would come in and over stay
their visit. They would start off with the idea of receiving their education and returning back
home, but soon found America to be the land in which they could grow in. Another one of the
ways in which the Chinese resisted were through the back-door. Many of them came through
Canada, as stated in “Through the back door” by William H. Siener. His article explains how
they were using Canada as the gateway into the US. They would enter through Chicago and
Detroit, one of the closest and least restricted borders from Canada. The Niagara Falls became
one of the most crossed over borders, and workers would travel from buffalo New York to
Toronto Canada.

Asians have been in America for a long period of time. Some of the first Asians to settle in
America can be traced back to the 19th century. Then, they had come to America seeking job
opportunities as construction workers or as mining workers. Most of the people to settle in
America first were the Chinese who were more accustomed to these jobs. They were later joined
by the Japanese who came to the country in search for agriculture and business opportunities.
This was to later rise significantly in the 20th century as other Asians from other countries like
Vietnam came into the country as refugees due to war in their home country. Defining Asian
American as a category of social difference.
