The world’s population is currently experiencing a rising exponential trend. Estimations
indicate that by the year 2050, the population will have grown by about 30% of the current
population. Both demographic changes and population growth are directly impacting the demand
for animal products, including meat, dairy products, and crops, and the demand is bound to
continue increasing to satisfy the growing population. As noted by Chai et al. (2019), meat and
milk production by 2050 will increase by 73% and 58%, respectively. Fundamentally, the
debates on climate change and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) are relatively modern concepts,
for they have become crucial points of interest recently. THESIS: Although most of people
around the world are enforcing measures to curb climate change such as driving fuel-efficient
vehicles, the measures are simply not enough and for that reason, humanity is encouraged to
pursue vegetarianism due to its significance in subverting the prevailing threat of climate change.
Vegetarianism is a practice that dictates a particular lifestyle where one decides to abstain
from all meat-based foods and opt to live upon vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts, and legumes. The
person may also choose to or not to add dairy products and eggs into the preferred diet. Although
most vegetarians decide to lead such a lifestyle for various reasons such as ethics, it has become
an interesting issue that vegetarianism can help curb the current climatic change situation. The
main concern is the sustainability of a vegetarian diet. Theoretically, a sustainable diet is one that
has minimal environmental impacts, considers biodiversity and ecosystems appropriately, and is
adequate in terms of nutrition (Chai et al., 2019). In other words, a sustainable diet is safe,
healthy, acceptable, and affordable. However, meat-based foods have proven to be unsustainable,
for they not only take large amounts of energy, but they also emit harmful gases into the

of vegetarianism is a viable option for solving this problem.
Adopting plant-based dietary provides a significant opportunity for the world to
mitigate and deal with climatic change.
