The final project is going to be a combination of both what you’ve learned about testing IV/DVs
and how to write in APA style. You will be graded (mainly) on correct APA format and writing
up an experiment.
Experiment for the final project:
60 undergraduate psychology students were asked to study thirty common nouns (like
‘dog’) after listening to one of two sets of instructions. In one group, participants were
told to look at each word and rate how well that item would help them survive if they
were stranded in the grasslands of a foreign land (including finding food, a clean water
source, and protecting themselves from predators).
A different group of 30 students was asked to rate the pleasantness of the same 30
words. After rating the words, participants completed a math distractor task
(completing simple addition and subtraction problems for 1 minute) and were then
asked to remember as many words as they could from the list.
Participants in the survival condition remembered 55% of the common nouns and
participants in the pleasantness condition remembered 43% of the common nouns. You
ran a t-test to see if the difference was statistically significant and the result was t (58) =
4.46, p < .05. So, the survival condition led to a statistically significant increase in memory performance vs. the pleasantness condition. In your introduction, you’ll want to include three references (I recommend searching PsychInfo or Google Scholar for the term ‘Survival Processing Advantage’ to quickly locate 3 relevant papers. For the figure, you could just include a bar graph with these two values (55% and 43%). You will want to write a complete APA paper for this assignment.
