HSC403 California State University Statistics Analysis of Variance SPSS I attached the file down below that has all the directions. Please make sure you have knowledge on how to use SPSS Name: ________________________
Part 1 – Directions:
The following scenarios are drawn from real research articles. Imagine you were the one
conducting these studies – tell me which type of statistical test would you use in the
following situations and why? Make sure you discuss the levels of measurement.
1. Researchers at the University of North Carolina Hospitals and Clinics installed
smart pumps to assist in the administration of adult and pediatric epidural
infusions. In order to determine whether healthcare workers approved of the new
technologies, they were asked at two time points (pre-implementation and postimplementation) to indicate whether they agreed (yes or no) with the statement
“Our site is providing good care to patients receiving epidural infusions.”
a. What test would the authors run to determine whether agreement with the
above statement was associated with time (pre-implementation and postimplementation)? Why?
2. In a recent article investigators looked at whether fixed or rotating shift schedules
would impact healthcare workers’ risk of burnout. In order to determine whether
rotating shifts lead to higher burnout, the researchers collected data from 260
healthcare workers who worked either fixed or rotating shift schedules. Burnout
was measured with the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), a scale that yields
burnout scores ranging from 22-to-154.
What hypothesis test would the researchers use to examine whether MBI
scores differed between fixed and rotating shift workers? Why?
3. In a study on the problem-solving ability of nurse managers, researchers set out to
compare the problem solving ability (measured with a scale from 35-210 pts) of
four age groups (21-30 vs. 31-40 vs. 41-50 vs. 51-60).
a. What test would the author have run to determine whether the problem
solving ability of these groups differed? Why?
Part 2: Use the SPSS output below to solve this problem
1. Scenario: I ran a chi square test of independence to determine whether there was
any association between whether students were in an online or face-to-face class and
the grade they got in the class (see output below).
a) Why was this the appropriate statistical test to run?
b) State the null and alternative hypotheses
c) Would this be a 1- or 2-tailed test? Why?
d) Interpret your finding in APA format. For your post hoc test, report the Observed
– Expected, if appropriate.
2. Interpret the following SPSS output to determine the relationship between absenteeism
a) Is there a statistically significant correlation between absenteeism in school
activities and GPA? Yes/No
b) What is the P-value?
c) What is the correlation coefficient?
d) Is the correlation modest, moderate or strong?
e) Is it positive or negative?
f) Explain this relationship in plain English.
