Essay #5: Play Analysis
Background: Throughout the semester, we have analyzed various texts and the ideas
those texts grappled with. Thus far, we’ve looked at essays, short stories, and a novel.
We’ve looked at a myriad of issues these texts address, such as patriarchy, government
control, relationships and more. By now, you’ve had a substantial amount of practice
developing your own arguments based off of you readings and locating research that
defends your stance; however, we haven’t spent much time researching what scholars in
academia argue about texts, which is something vital to academic writing.
Assignment: Develop an argument about a play. Your argument must seek to prove
someone else’s current argument wrong, seek to extend or amend a current argument, or
seek to argue something new. You must choose a play off of the list I created.

• You will need to briefly summarize (5-7 sentences) the play you choose in your essay
