Analysis of JD Vance’s Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis
Books, Worth. Summary and Analysis of Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture
in Crisis: Based on the Book by JD Vance. Open Road Media, 2017.
The book brings to light the behavioral situation that is dominant in the poor white working
communities in America. The politics in the country are shaped in a way that the population blames
their misery and unfortunate economic situation on foreigners and policies that they don’t have
control over. Hillbilly is the term used by the author to refer to those people who are always
focused on passing the blame concerning their plight to other people. The author of the book
narrates his difficult childhood and the deliberate efforts that he made to escape his misery leading
him to Afghanistan while in the army and finally to Yale law school. The rise of President Donald
Trump into the presidency is a result of the Hillbilly’s wanting one of their own in an attempt to
project their misery to foreigners instead of looking into their undoing. The book sheds more light
on the family lives of ordinary Americans and the challenges both cultural and behavioral that are
faced.
Sweeney, Michael S. “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis.”
Journalism History 43.1 (2017): 58-58.
Michael S elaborates on the factors that are brought out in the book. Addiction and laziness
that flow in some American families have led them to rely on welfare after the parents quit work
and engage in drugs and violence. The author points on the decay of the family structure in
American society and the lack of political will to rectify the situation. The fact that factories have
closed down and moved their business to areas where there is cheap labor is a reality that shows
the overrated economic might of the west. The author also points out the misplaced priorities of
the government, which focus on wars in the Middle East while all those resources would be useful
back home. The culture of American society is at risk and lacks heroes who are supposed to
motivate the population to make the right steps towards the future.
Analysis of Ta-Nahisi Coates: Between the World and Me
Stern, Kristen. “Between France and me: Ta-Nehisi Coates, Alain Mabanckou and
transatlantic misreadings of race.” Journal of the African Literature Association 13.2 (2019):
201-217.
The author, in his work, aims at shinning the light on the oppression of the black
community in America. The fact that blacks seem to have been deliberately excluded in the social
and political arena of the country is an indicator that the white population is positioned to
continuously discriminate against the blacks as long as no action is taken. American society is
affected by historical decisions that saw the creation of a barrier between the white community
and the black population. Evidence shows that American history is marked by a continuous
character of violence against different people across the globe.
Welding, Nahum. “Triple Consciousness: The Reimagination of Black Female Identities in
Contemporary American Culture.” Open Cultural Studies 2.1 (2018): 296-306.
Welding, in his work, sheds light on the plights faced by the black population in America.
The history of the American people that is marred with violence and policies that are poised to
favor the white person. The authors also point out the role of slaves and on the building of the
current American success, which is only attributed to the white population. The fact that whites
are always at an advantage is an indicator that the historical injustices have not been solved since
no deliberate action is taken to try and resolve the issues.
