A new study shows that a combination of psychedelic drugs or hallucinogens and a
combination with medication could help treat depression and anxiety disorders. The
specific drug used in the study was Psilocybin, also known as mushrooms. The effects of this
drug range from assisting with social interactions to limiting a person’s focus to themselves.
The study also found that in combination with psychotherapy, psilocybin also produced
antidepressant affects on patients with life-threatening cancers.
1. Do you think that using halluncinogens is a good way to treat disorders like depression
and anxiety?
2. If this study is accurate, how might this new discovery change the way we use
drugs/medicine?

This article was about the use of hallucinogens among college students. It talked about how
college is a time for many young adults to be on their own and experience new things.
College students are very vulnerable to drug addiction and drug abuse. Some of the reasons
for this mentioned in the article are due to stress from juggling school work, social
obligations, and work. This can be a big change for a lot of people, especially if they have
never lived away from home. A student’s environment and the people they choose to
hangout with can have an effect on drug use as well. Hallucinogens are among the common
drugs used within college ages students. This may be due to the club/rave/party scene on
some college campuses. Hallucinogens are mind altering drugs that work directly on the
central nervous system. There can be mild to severe symptoms when using hallucinogens
and when mixed with other drugs, medications, or alcohol can even be fatal.
1. Why do you think college students may turn to hallucinogens over other types of drugs?
2. Do you think college students think about the consquences of using these types of drugs
before taking them or do you think they know about the consequences and take them
anyway?

Currently, the DEA restricts hallucinogens, and they are currently not accepted for medical use
and have a high potential for abuse.
However, in the video link above, hallucinogens are discussed through the personal experience
of a woman named Pierce, who claims hallucinogens saved her life after she had been
struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts.
The process involves patients taking one single hallucinogenic pill, laying on the couch for 6
hours with calming music and a blanket, and that has allowed over 300+ patients to have
improved mood and decreased feelings of depression.
The drug used is Psilocybin, which reduces the brains response to negative stimuli. Patients
who have have undergone this type of treatment have said that 1-2 sessions has cured/helped
their depression for months.
