MANAGEMENT OF A COMPANY

Walmart started as a single retail store fifty years ago with their marketing style of
selling more for less, which they have transferred over generations. The company uses
technology to avail their business 24hours, and the customers can shop online anywhere and at
anytime through their mobile devices and from stores. The company has an ample workforce
comprising of 1.5 million associates from the US and 1.7 million associates from the rest of
the world. It operates business websites in 10 countries and has its stores in 27 countries. In
total, the company has 11,523 stores worldwide (Walmart, 2019).
The retail giant has undergone various management style changes from its inception to
the present date. Significant change management occurred when the founder of the retail store
died in 1992, thirty years after its creation. The management style adopted by Sam Walton was
authoritarian. When he died, the management underwent significant change in form choosing
the extroverted style of leadership by Robson Walton, who took over after the death of his
father, Sam Walton. Robson came with a different way of management, which emphasized the
development of existing talent, and he relies on charisma to bring out the best from its
employees. Also, the extroverted management style is more of servant leadership where the
managers choose to support others first before their agenda. The philosophy of Robson is that
everybody in the company is a leader where managers and employees support each other.
Unlike Sam Walton’s authoritarian management style, which relies on strict orders where the
employees must obey failure to which leads to punishment (Ark, 2014). Most managers using
this type of management style are industrious, less trusting, candid, and orderly.
Another critical change in management was the change in the structure of the company over
time. In 2014, the company fell into three regions in the US. The beginnings of the company
were overseen by one man, Sam Walton which changed after his death. More so, in 2014, a

change in management structure further occurred due to the division of the US region. Also,
the expansion of the retail to the international market resulted in the development of the
management structure, which results in a change. Today, the company has five presidents; One
Overall President and four CEOs who have a significant role in ensuring that there is improved
performance in the organization.
Managers have a crucial role in leading the organization to success of a change
initiative. Any change affects the workforce and how it will react to the switch is dependent on
the leaders managing the teams affected by the change. The role of management in responding
to change in an organization is significant. First, the manager has to communicate the transition
to the employees and at the same time demonstrating that he supports the change. Secondly,
the manager guides the employees through the change process as well as providing support and
engaging with them regularly. Lastly, the manager identifies the resistance from employees
and manages them. For instance, when Doug McMillon took over the CEO Job in 2014, his
focus was mainly on e-commerce (Ark, 2014). He did this by acquiring Jet.com, which led to
a change in some of the operations of Walmart. McMillan focused on increased online selling,
and Jet.com was key to the success of e-commerce. Therefore, he communicated to the
employees about what changes in their role will be considering the acquisition of Jet.com. After
that, the CEO, through supervisors and managers, guided the entire workforce through the
change that comes with the purchase (Layne, 2015). Finally, the managers then look for the
resistance of employees to change that comes with acquisition and employ strategies to handle
opposition.
Walmart is known worldwide of its low prices on large amounts of goods. However,
the change in management results in significant changes in decisions that involve
spokespersons and vendors. Due to the company’s emphasis on low prices of products,
agreements, and alterations have to be made between the company and the sellers of Walmart.

Changes to the term and conditions consist of changes in payment terms. The extent of the
payment period to the sellers means that the retail will have enough cash to rapidly increase
product and collect revenue before the sellers start asking questions. In other words, by
increasing the payment period, the company will have more extended collection period, which
will avail cash for operation and increased sales. In the long run, the increased sales will be
used to pay the suppliers at the right time, both the company and the vendors win. Just like the
philosophy of McMillan, who employs a democratic style of management, a win-win situation
is always preferred than any other case. In the beginning, the terms and condition changes will
negatively impact the vendors. However, as time goes by, the revenue of the company becomes
abundant, and the company will be paying its debts and obligations to the vendors on time.
Thus the vendors will be attracted to the terms and conditions in the long run. At any cost, the
company must maintain its tradition of low pricing.
In the retail industry, customer satisfaction is the most important goal as well as better
communication and interpersonal skills between and among the employees to enhance
teamwork and efficient workforce. Since the retailer stores are in direct contact with the
customers, it can provide channels that the customer provide their views on their customer
experience. When customers give their opinions, the management team work to correct any
problems reported by customers and make improvements on service delivery based on their
recommendations. A company that values customer feedback is guaranteed success. Customer
feedback enhances the efficiency of the retail shop as it leads to better chances of satisfying the
customers wants to be based on their responses. The company can best attain this by putting in
place proper channels of communication to ensure efficient flow of information within the
company (Pope, 2015).
Customers are sensitive to price changes, quality of products, and the way service is
delivered. Every customer is valued regardless of the amount they contribute to the company.

However, in every retail shop, there are two groups of customers; loyal and seasonal customers.
It is the goal of every retail shop to convert the annual customer into a loyal one. Therefore, for
Walmart to attract seasonal customers, it has to offer incentives to customers who shop with
Walmart for a long time consistently. This way, the annual customer will be encouraged to buy
more and more in the hope of being rewarded for loyalty. Rewards, in this case, are given in
the form of cars, gifts, shopping vouchers, employment opportunities, and sponsorships.
On the other hand, customer satisfaction goes hand in hand with a positive attitude and
pleasant working environment of employees. When the employees are happy, the customers
will. In the same way as customers, employees should be motivated and encouraged to give all
their best in ensuring the success of the retail shop. Therefore, the management of Walmart can
offer incentives in the form of a pay rise or promotion (Johnston, 2016). A well-performing
employee can get rewarded by increasing the salary to be more motivated to give all their best
in performing their daily duties. In the long run, efficiency and effectiveness of employees
arrive. Also, other incentives that can go to employees are career development programs such
as training and study leaves — the more the motivation, the happier the workforce and more
thrilled the workforce happier the customers. Therefore, better customer experience and quality
incentive programs for the employees positively impact the customers and employees.
For the company to be successful in adopting the ever-changing needs of customers, it
has to put in place an effective communication strategy which is achieved through open
communication strategies across all departments and levels in an organization. In an open
communication environment, employees and customers feel free to share their ideas, criticisms,
and feedback. Open communication enhances excellent inter-personal skills between the
employees and consumers, which improves trust and loyalty among the customers. Also, public
communications should be inclusive in the sense that all the employees feel inclusive to the
decisions of the day to day activities of the company. When information and ideas that are

crucial to the business and affect the daily functions of employees, it will lead to uncoordinated
features. Furthermore, when top officials hide sensitive information to employees, it will lead
to a loss of trust and poor inter-personal relationship among the employees. Therefore, all
information has to be inclusive to every member of the organization (Pope, 2015).
Open communication means that the communication process is two-way traffic. When
everyone contributes to discussions with their ideas and knowledge towards a particular
problem, effectiveness and efficiency will occur. Like McMillan, who is a democratic leader,
values the contribution of every employee in the sense that develops their talents and abilities.
Also, for a clear communication strategy has aspects of multi-channels of communication,
flexibility, and result orientation. For a message to have the most impact, it has to be conveyed
so many times through different channels. Employees are different and interpret words
differently. Use of multiple channels of communication ensures the message is expressed in
the right way as possible. In the long run, the company effectively and efficiently adapts to the
changing needs and preferences of consumers (Johnston, 2016).
