The term Magical Negro was popularized by director Spike Lee. The term defines a
supporting character who comes to the aid of a white protagonists in a work. Magical Negro
characters, who often possess special insight or mystical powers, have long been a tradition in
American fiction. In recent years the inclusion of Magical Negro characters as a plot device has
come under criticism and has been characterized as stereotypical and an act of racial profiling,
painting African American individuals as little more than a tool for another to get what he/she
needs in their journey.
During the publication of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the novel was widely seen
as progressive and Mark Twain even felt that America’s views on slavery needed to change. But
when considering the current racial issues surrounding works of fiction and film does the
portrayal of Jim in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn still maintain progressive ideals or has
the novel become simply another example of the Magical Negro? In a five paragraph essay
