Surrealism and Silhouette Theme Comparison Responses Choose TWO themes that you have previously studied, and compare them- make sure to provide some connections between them, if applicable. As usual, provide at least one image PER theme! reply two student post each one about 100 words 1. I want my resting place to match the largesse of my hope in a better state
in the afterlife. A grand pyramid-style grave atop the highest place at home
is my ideal choice. My belief in a better state of being in the afterlife is
based on the collective beliefs that have characterized my family for
generations. One of the popular beliefs passed on to me that spans back
many generations suggests that the east, where the sun rises, brings good
things. Accordingly, it is customary for the family to bury deceased family
members with the upper body positioned towards the east. I would like my
going out of this life to go a step further with this custom by resting in a
large, pyramid-like structure with a door facing east. The large size of the
burial place would symbolize two key beliefs. First, the structure would
reinforce my steadfast hope in a better afterlife. Second, the size and door
of the structure would represent my desire to do and see good prevail in
both the earthly life and afterlife.
a.Ancient Egyptian Pyramids – Large Monuments
The selected resting place is related to artwork in the chapter representing
ancient Egypt. The pyramids of Egypt depict the concept of a large burial
monument from the ancient world. Although a few thousand years may have
passed since they were built, the monuments continue to depict the strong
beliefs of that may have influenced those buried within. Similarly, my resting
place would probably stand the test of time to influence generations to come
and perhaps end up in texts used in art classes.
2. I want to be laid to rest with a crucifix when I leave this life. I think the
afterlife is a spiritual world. In this sense, earthly objects may not be
useful, but a crucifix embodies both the spiritual and physical worlds. This
object holds a special place in my community beyond acting as an
identifier for the followers of the Christian faith. I suppose that it brings the
power of Christ closer to the holder. There are various notions of the
afterlife. The resulting uncertainty brings chills down my spine. A crucifix
would keep me on the safe side in the event that I face some dark forces
during the transition.
a.Qin Shi Huang’s Tomb – Burial with Special Items
My chosen burial with a crucifix relates to the art lesson regarding Qin Shi
Huang’s Tomb. This artwork bears some similarities with my preferred mode
of burial. Many artefacts reflecting the empire accompanied the departed
emperor in the tomb. The emperor may have been thinking of maintaining
power in the afterlife. A tomb with the relevant objects depicting the emperor’s
power serves a purpose similar to that of a crucifix in a grave.

3. I want a Christian burial ceremony at my funeral. Christianity influences a
large part of my notions about the afterlife. I want to identify with Jesus as
regards death based on the notion that through Him I can overcome
death. A Christian burial would help me achieve this objective. A proper
departure for a believer like me would involve Christian procedures. This
form of burial would likely draw a significant number of Christians besides
family, friends and priests. The voices of the many attendants would
arguably make a stronger intercession on my behalf.
a.Ritualized Ceremony
A Christian burial is akin to a ritualized celebration as learnt in the chapter.
The ceremony carries a shared meaning underpinned by the people and
objects present at the ceremony as well as the procedures involved.

Art Out of Context
An image from the textbook, which contains nudity, where its meaning could
be misinterpreted without the proper context that the book provides.
1. Choose one artwork from the entire textbook.
Artwork described in the textbook titled “A Villa of Mysteries” in Pompeii Room
number 5 shows a photo taken BY Stanley A. Jashemski that was obtained
from the archives of the University of Maryland.
(www//hdl.handle.net/1903.1/19021/.) the picture size is 7 ¼” x 4 ¼ “
2. Create an alternative meaning that could be misconstrued for the artwork
when viewed out of context.
The artwork gives the viewers a lot of perceptions of what it represents and
the type of message it is conveying. For instance, one would say that the
portrait displays acts of physical torture since the woman kneeling is being
punished while the rest two standing pleads for the forgiveness of their
counterpart.
3. Provide the correct context as described in your research.
However, despite the many perceptions about the artwork, there is the actual
meaning that is specific to the context of its use. The themes in the artwork
are pain and transformation that follows a rite of passage performed in women
of the Pompeii people. Women were put through initiation ceremony as a sign
of conversion from one stage to another one in adulthood. In the picture one
woman in clothes standing on the right grimaces with agony on her face with
a whip across her back. Standing is a naked woman who shows celebratory
gestures to symbolize success in completion of the rite of passage.
Explanations above are according to Gambardella et al. (2016).
4. How much does context matter in interpreting an artwork’s meaning?
Interpretation of works of art may take a biased perspective unless the context
of its creation is stated. One would, therefore, interpret the meaning
appropriately. (Sachant et al. 2015) noted that it is essential to know the
context since it forms the basis of understanding more of what it entails. This
is according to
