Invisible Man: Research Paper
Invisible Man is a novel by Ralph Ellison first published in 1952 that primarily elaborates
on the story of a black man, with anecdotes and countless life experiences involving race
equality items and a number of struggles encountered by African-American society during the
United States’ post-war years. The protagonist, and narrator of the book is a black man,
nameless, and characterized by a galore of variations to his personality; Intellect, Introspection,
and more virtues such as talent in languages and speaking, as well as a hard-worker’s mindset.
As mentioned above, the main focus of the book is to bring awareness to the readers of
the terrible, truly unacceptable condition and overall perception (by the white men) of AfricanAmerican citizens; Every man deserves the right not to be invisible, however, the protagonist of
this book does not seem to successfully obtain such right.
The book has been defined as “A masterpiece of storytelling, transfixing and indelible.”
as it A masterpiece of storytelling, transfixing and indelible.” as it included an exceptional
amount of references and thought-invoking instances where the reader has no choice but to stop
and think, evaluating the history of the United States, as a country, as a society overall, focusing
on positives, but still offering a considerable amount of attention to the true losses and negative
choices made by the ruling men. One of the most incredible parts of the book involves a full-on

physical fight, referred to as “Battle Royale”, between the nameless protagonist and a fellow
college student, truly portrayed as sort of a rite of passage, or simply an entertainment
opportunity for the men in power that would then offer the young black fellow a full scholarship
to their high-league university — The protagonist, after the fight is completed, with a mouth full
of blood, delivers his speech to obtain the scholarship, and even though he does not appear in
good conditions for a high-level speech, he succeeds, his words speak louder than the color of his
skin, the devastated appearance after a fight, or his blood-filled mouth.
The man, while still maintaining a sort of, again, entertainment-based mindset throughout
the fight and speech, are impressed by the young fellow’s words, and after a quick moment of
indecisiveness on the man’s speaking of “equality,” they all begin howling and chuckling and
ultimately announce the man’s successful academic future opportunity.
The protagonist lives through a number of rather unpleasant, adverse instances, all involving
attributes of non-equality between African-American and the whites, still he hardly ever fails to
show tenacity and boldness, as he truly believes in a future where a black man does not have to
worry about the racist behavior of white men, and all of the social barriers that 1930’s United
States imposed on colored society. The man, even though he is facing a substantial amount of
racism towards his person, he does not completely aware of it, as, after all, he has a truly sweet
and caring, understanding personality at his core. The lack of a complete awareness of what is
really going on around him does not serve him well for a good part of his adventures in the book,
still he does indeed figure it out later in the novel, and such finding serves him rather well, as
finding that he is, undeniably, invisible to the members of his world, represent a total switch in
the protagonist’s overall view and perception of the society he lives in; Becoming aware of his

invisibility ultimately makes the young man, the protagonist, free — But what does freedom
represent? What does freedom actually mean and involve for a juvenile in post-war United
States? In the end, it is more of a mindset, rather than actual asset; it’s all about perception of
others, and, more important in the case of the Invisible Man, the perception third parties have of
you.
