Module 03 Mystery Short Story Part 1 Continue your course project creative writing portfolio by adding to your growing collection of work. This time, you will concentrate on the beginnings of your short fiction piece. You will begin the journey of creation by reading a variety of authors from various time periods and various walks of life. Be sure to read examples of short fiction prior to starting your own story.

Step One: Begin your short story by brainstorming, mind-mapping, or free writing about your story by answering the following questions. The assignment this week should be 2-3 pages in length. You are telling this story to an audience that is unfamiliar with the characters, the plot, so put in as much detail as you can. This is the beginning of your completed short story, which is due in Module 04.

After you have completed the assignment, don’t forget to write your Learning Assessment page for the portfolio by answering the questions in the Overview about your personal observations on your learning. There is nothing to submit for your personal observations on the writing until Module 05, but you should write the 1-page observation each week and copy and paste it into your writing portfolio. That way, you do not feel rushed at the end of the term.

Step Two: Follow the guidelines below to complete the assignment. A good idea for this assignment is to begin by answering the questions below:

What is the plot of the story? Remember, a short story needs an exciting hook to grab the reader, then rising action to keep the reader wanting to read more, and finally, a concluding act where you tie up all the loose ends or resolve the conflict in a satisfactory manner. Outline these 3 parts.
Who is in the story? How many characters? What are their physical characteristics (height, weight, eye color, hair style, body art, scars, etc.) ages, backgrounds, ethnicity, culture, familial status, vocation, religion, etc.? All are important to “flesh out” the character and make him or her seem real to the reader. How do your characters speak? Their dialogue needs to reflect their own unique personality, so that the reader understands who is talking by the way in which they speak without you having to use, “He said, or Sarah said” over and over.
What is the time period of the story? In other words, does it take place in the past? In the far distant future? How are you signaling the time period to the reader?
Where does the story take place? Be very specific because you will need to describe this locale so the reader can see, hear, touch, smell, and taste it! Remember, it does not have to take place in your own neighborhood. It can even take place in the future or on another planet! Let your imagination soar!
Add a title, an introduction, and at least two pages of the actual story.

Submit your paper with a title page in APA format.
