Three virtues of media practice
A good collective life is only possible if moral questions like ‘truthfulness’ are couched in the
virtues of individuals. In abstract terms, ‘truth’ is complex, multi-sided, and difficult to reach.
This is why we turn to ‘virtues’.
• accuracy involves a commitment to make the effort, and apply the resources necessary to
ensure so far as possible that what one communicates is accurate
• sincerity involves saying things that what one actually believes in, in line with their wider
beliefs and value system
• care involves taking into account the impacts of one’s communication and the
consequences that follow when what one says is circulated – this is an acute issue for
media in a time of user-generated content
Types of media injustice
1. When a specific person is harmed by media and has no effective means of
publicizing that harm or seeking redress for it
2. When definable groups of people are not given due recognition in the outputs
of a media institution or media sector that claims some representative status
in relation to the wider population to which those groups belong
3. When an individual or group wants a direct voice but is prevented by lack of
access to any means of representation
4. When potential public spaces of discourse are closed, disadvantaging not just
specific individuals but any individual, group or movement that wants to make
public claims for resources or recognition (e.g. Lawrence Lessig’s argument for
the necessity of an online ‘commons’)
Please try to give some interesting examples, if there are some
pictures would be better.
