Your paper must look at not only WHAT the author is saying, but HOW the author is
saying it. This will be the focus of your thesis statement. This paper must discuss the
figurative meaning of the poem, as well as the technical aspects that add to the figurative
meaning. For example, is it the form of the poem that adds to the meaning? Is there a certain type
of imagery or metaphor throughout the poem(such as metaphors/imagery with household objects,
nature, etc.)?
7. Your conclusion should restate your strongest points, and the significance they add to your
paper. The “So What?” question should be in mind throughout your paper.
Advice:
1. Do two phases of research. First, research to educate yourself about the piece of literature and the
topic you are researching. Second, decide on your thesis idea and then do more research on this
focused idea. Look for research that supports your thesis. Don’t let research take over your essay.
2. Explicating the piece before deciding on an analysis may be helpful in developing a thesis. For
example, summarizing each stanza, or every ten lines may be helpful in order to see how the
author is saying their message.
3. Looking at an author’s biography is often helpful in the analysis of the poem; however, your
paper should not solely rely on their biography for your analysis, as not all authors draw from
their own life for poems. Figure out whether or not the poem you are analyzing is written by an
author who writes in the confessional style.

Looking at the time period and historical context is helpful for the meaning.
ALWAYS look up any words or references you do not understand. Always look up names
mentioned in a poem that you do not recognize. Even if you do recognize the name, look it up, as
this is an allusion.

Look for interviews with the author or essays by the author. These are both valid sources for
evidence or argument support.
