Wet nurses, or amas de leche, were common in more prosperous
families, and appear frequently in images from archives in
Lima, but this is the only known photo of its kind from Cusco.
Convenience aside, the practice of wet nursing also speaks to the
incidence of maternal mortality in childbirth. Because wet nurses
were typically lower class blacks or indigenous servants, their faces
were covered in portraits, a reflection of the casual racism of the
time.

Las amas de leche fueron comunes en las familias más prósperas y
aparecen con frecuencia en las imágenes de los archivos en Lima,
aunque esta es la única fotografía de este tipo que se conoce
proveniente de Cusco. Además de su conveniencia, la práctica de
usar amas de leche también habla sobre la frecuencia con que
ocurría la mortalidad maternal durante el parto. Debido a que las
amas de leche eran usualmente sirvientes negras o indígenas de la
clase baja, sus rostros se cubrían en los retratos, lo cual reflejaba el
racismo casual de la época.
