Objective:
To learn about a chemical present in the environment that has been deemed a “pollutant”.
Background:
We often hear the term pollution, but what is it really and how do we determine when the
presence of a chemical is pollution? Many pollutants are naturally occurring but when in the
wrong place at the wrong time, and/or at the wrong concentration, they are considered
pollution. This exercise is to get us thinking about pollution and what makes a chemical a
pollutant.
Assignment:
Take on the identity of a pollutant and write your autobiography. Your autobiography should be
a story first and foremost. Include the chemical and physical details about yourself, your
discovery, history and current applications always weaving them into your story. You are
encouraged to be as creative in writing your story as you want to be.
You must include a bibliography citing at least three references (see below for citing format).
Select one of the listed pollutants and write a 3-4 page, double-spaced, Calibri 11 font, 1-inch
margins, story that may address: history of the chemical: is it natural or man-made; chemical
identity of the pollutant; how it gets into the environment; the legitimate use of the chemical;
hazardous effects on health; acceptable limits; current events with regard to the chemical and
so on, all as though your, yourself, ARE the pollutant. If you choose an unusual format for your
story (graphic novel, poem, other) it must contain scientific information that is accurate and
equates to a 3-4 page paper. If it is one that will be covered in chapters 2 or 3 of the textbook,
some of the information should come from sources other than your textbook.
Some of the chemicals on the pollutant list below are very well known and have a lot of
information about them. Others less so. This paper should contain some scientific information,
but can contain anything you find interesting to report, including an opinion of your own. This
story must be original, creative and can be illustrated (illustrations do not count towards page
requirement) and all sources must be cited. You should have at least 3 references (besides your
textbook) in the story. Sources that are acceptable are other books, internet websites, articles
in journals or in the popular media.
Pollutant List:
Lead, Mercury, PCBs, Ozone, Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen Dioxide, Sulfur Dioxide, Particulate
Matter, Carbon Monoxide, Hydrogen Sulfide, Chromium, Arsenic, Benzene, Dioxins, Carbon
Dioxide, detergents, pesticides, herbicides, DDT, CFCs, PFAS, sewage, fertilizers, plastic pollution
in bodies of water (others can be proposed with approval from professor)
Note about citing:
Appropriate internal citing will be with a subscripted number after the sentence containing the
cited information. Be careful to form the sentence into your own words. In addition, include a
reference section at the end of the paper that includes the number of the reference and the
citation. The reference section does not count toward the 3-4 page limit, and can be on an
additional page if necessary. The references should be in the following format:
Journal Articles: Cissell, K., James, L., “The Importance of a Chemist Slam Dunking a Basketball
all up in LeBron James’ Grill” Journal of Awesome Basketball Moves, (2013) 23:817-825.
Alternatively, you do not have to include the journal title. Be consistent, however.
Books: Cissell, K., Slam Dunking Made Easy, Old Spice Press: Saginaw, MI, 2013.
Chapter or Article in a book with an editor: Bird, L., “You Will Never Beat me in a Three-Point
Shooting Contest” in Letters to Michael Jordan, Spoelstra, E., ed., Old Spice Press, Saginaw, MI,
2014.

Descriptive Scoring Rubric for the Pollutant Autobiography
The Exceptional Autobiography (37-40 points)
The exceptional autobiography is an interesting story about some aspect of the life of a
pollutant as if it were human. It engages the reader making them want to read it. It includes
numerous facts about the pollutant carefully woven into the story. It is long enough to tell a
good story but not overly long. The exceptional autobiography exhibits precision and
control of language (grammar). The exceptional autobiography will not be a collection of
facts, rather a story. The word choice, sentence structure, and transitions demonstrate
attention to detail.
The Above Average Autobiography (34-36 points)
The above average autobiography is a good story about some aspect of the life of the
pollutant as if it were human. It tries to engage the reader’s interest but may not totally
succeed. It includes considerable factual information about the pollutant but may be more
than a “recitation of the facts.” It is long enough to tell the story but not overly long.
The above average autobiography exhibits syntactic maturity, but may exhibit lapses in
precision and control, including questionable word choice, awkward sentence structure or
awkward or inadequate transitions.
The Average Autobiography (28-33 points)
The average autobiography tells a story which only marginally captures the reader’s
interest, or may be more a recitation of facts than a story. It is likely to be either too long or
too short to be effective. At the sentence level the average autobiography demonstrates
frequent failures to attend to detail. Word choices may be inappropriate, sentence structure
awkward, and the cohesion marred by inadequate or absent transitions.
The Below Average Autobiography (24-27 points)
The below average autobiography may be a poorly constructed story but is more likely to be
a listing of physical and chemical facts as if told by the pollutant. It will probably be quite
short but may also be quite long with too much detail. The sentence structure of a below
average autobiography is generally awkward with improper word choices that obscure the
meaning, and omitted transitions producing erratic jumps in the story line.
The Failing Autobiography (0-23 points)
The failing autobiography has only a weak story line if one at all. It is more likely to be a
listing of physical and chemical properties as if told by the pollutant. It is probably very
short. The failing autobiography shows little or no attention to detail at the sentence level
obscuring the meaning of the text
