Abortion Issue and Health Wellness Presentation For this assignment you will rpresent an integrative paper on some aspect of family characteristics and health. Families are often considered to be the frontline for health/wellness and the delivery/support system for health care. Health can be defined as complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. For this assignment you will explore the relationship between family characteristics (e.g., SES, structure, dynamics, knowledge, geographic location, human and social capital) and health/wellness. Consider both physical and psychological health and/or issues as reproductive health, abortion, fertility, chronic illness, caretaking, disabilities, and others. Some questions to stimulate your thinking include: How does the particular health/wellness issue affect families? What are attitudes towards that issue (your own and within particular families, communities, states, regions, societies)? How do cultural attitudes towards the health/wellness issue impact families and/or treatment? How are services provided? Prevention? What works for families? What could be better? Consider the variations in family composition. Do cultural attitudes impact certain families more than others? Is there evidence of families who are more vulnerable related to that health/wellness issue? Why?There are numerous questions you could consider related to families and a particular health issue. Be sure to explain the health issue you chose (demographic information / prevalence, history, and treatment). In your paper and presentation, please discuss impacts on both families in the US and at least one of the countries from the Families in a Global Context text.I have already had the paper for this presentation. Please base on this paper and make a PowerPoint with great visual. You need to make at least 9 pages and please provide the Speech Notes for each page. The whole presentation is around 5 minutes. Abortion issue and health wellness
Introduction
Currently, every health issue revolves around what is known as holistic health. This
terminology is used to refer to the complete health of an individual. Holistic health covers
spiritual, physical, and mental wellness. Among the issues that pose a great debate in the
development of the holistic approach in the US is the issue of abortion. It is one of the most
trending topics in the community. Should abortion be done? If so, under what circumstances?
The debate is constructed on the legal and ethical morals of the society (Cook, 2014). The
knowledge, geographic location, structure, dynamics, social and human capital have a strong
influence on the issue. In all the characteristics, there are both physical and psychological
consequences involved. For instance, what are the implications of having an abortion to an
individual’s body? What about the family members, what is the effect on them? What about the
society, what is its take on the entire challenge? These questions can be responded to by first
what abortion is. This is an issue which affect not only the US but also the whole world and the
developing nations are most affected, for instance, South Africa (Klausen, 2015).
History
From early 1900s, laws have been put in motion regarding the issue of abortion in the US
(Reagan, 1997). Still, up to the moment, the topic is unsettled; hence, the numerous debates over
the nation. The issue has taken different approaches from social, political, cultural, and
economical. Abortion used to be legal in all states before its decriminalization by the Supreme
Court in 1973 in Roe v. Wade. At the moment, the laws vary from state to state.

Understanding the Abortion Issue
The well-known definition of abortion is the termination of pregnancy in human beings
deliberately. This can be due to personal or health issues. For instance, from statistics, when
young girls attending high school or college get pregnant, they may decide to terminate
pregnancies to continue with studies. They fear the responsibilities ahead and choose pregnancy
termination to be the best option. Several cases in the developing nations of the world like Latin
America and most of the African continent have been among the leading ones in teenage
pregnancy. Most of them end up in abortions. South Africa is an excellent example of those
nations affected by the issue of abortion. In fact, according to the legal history of this nation, any
woman is allowed to have an abortion under certain conditions. These reasons include:
❖ If her health stake is at risk
❖ The cause of the pregnancy is rape
❖ In case incest is responsible for the pregnancy
❖ Financial instability.
Regardless of the reasons behind the abortion, both the US and South African communities
face the same impacts (Klausen, 2015). Some of them are successful while others lead to the
death of the mother and the child in the womb. In some cases, the mother can be forced to
terminate the pregnancy by medical professionals if she is having health problems which might
lead to having an unhealthy child in the future. In other cases, the pregnancy might be interfering
with the mother’s health, and in this case, the mother will be given an option to terminate it to
regain her health. There are various procedures involved in the abortion process. Some of them
are risky since they do not include qualified practitioners.

Regardless of the intentions of abortion, several debates still emerge in the American and
South African communities. Should abortion be done? In families, this issue affects every
member either directly or indirectly. For instance, if a parent will allow her child to do an
abortion, she might end up being a subject of blame if the process will lead to the death of their
daughter or infertility in the future. If the parents fail to teach their children how to cope up with
early pregnancy, they might mislead them, and the entire family members will be affected. This
will cause conflicts. The daughter will suffer physically and mentally. On the other hand, the
family members will suffer mentally and develop negative attitudes towards those behind the
suffering of their own. When you bond with your children in future, you will be haunted by the
actions you did losing one who could have been part of the joy you are experiencing in life.
Regret is what takes control of such people, and there is so much guilt that causes stress. If a
family loses one in abortion, there is much suffering and stress. What if the one lost is the mother
of other children, how will they grow up without their breadwinner? If many mouths are
depending on such a person, then it marks the beginning of troublesome life in society. Some are
vital resources in the community with the services they provide and losing them becomes the
beginning of suffering in a particular city.
Different families, communities, religions, and states take the abortion issue differently.
For most beliefs, it is wrong (a sin) to kill another person. Such work is only left for the gods.
For instance, the Christian community rely on the texts found in their holy book (the Bible) to
pass messages that are against killing. In one of the verses of this sacred book, it says, ‘man
should not kill.’ This is one of the Ten Commandments which Christians believe is their guide
towards doing right in the society. By abiding by this law, this community does not give room
for abortion.
FAMILY PROBLEMS

All geographical locations where you will find Christian communities, abortion is
prohibited, and those that engage in it are considered murderers regardless of the reason behind
it. From my family, we believe it is illegal and unethical to participate in the practice. It is
unlawful because the constitution does not permit the taking of another person’s life. It is
immoral because you deny an innocent person a chance to live. Every person has a right to live
and terminating one’s life is not ethical. There is no one important than another one. This is what
most communities also believe. And those that support abortion practices should be made to face
the law. The only exceptions are when the health of the mother is in danger. In that case, it
should be done by professionals. Any hospitals that allow healthy people to terminate the life of
the fetus without genuine reasons should be closed down since it is immoral.
Cultural attitudes
Many cultures in the US do not allow abortions to take place without a proper reason. A
proper basis refers to medical reasons which can lead to the death of the mother or of the child
before birth. These cultural attitudes bind the community to what they should believe. The
common law governs most cultures in this place. They hold firmly on what most people think is
right. In this case, they have developed a belief behind their minds that abortion is illegal and
should be considered a crime. Another thing is that society is a product of religion. For instance,
in my place, religion dominance has a significant influence on the people and most of what we
do is what the different bodies say. Most of them support the idea that life is sacred and only the
gods have the power to give and take it. For no reason should one take away the life of another
one. These beliefs have impacted families in many ways. For instance, the way they conduct
themselves. They have set rules which govern what is moral. Most times, people that engage in
abortions are those that get unwanted pregnancies due to sex practices such as fornication,

prostitution, and incest. Others are rape victims. For the Christian community, no reason should
be the cause of the abortion cases: not even rape nor the health status of the mother.
Preventing the Issue
To prevent this issue from happening, there are several things which the cultures are
doing. To begin with, setting rules. Different states in the US have laws that govern sexual
abusers in the community. For instance, in most states, sexual offenders such as rapists are
registered online, and their details revealed to the public. This makes the public aware of those
who might do them harm. It keeps them on their toes. For this reason, the number of pregnancies
from rape reduce which means abortion rates are going down. Another way is education. The
community is educating the youth about sex education. They have learned skills that help them
to take care of themselves so that they do not end up being victims of early pregnancies that are
subjected to an abortion.
What works for most families presently are medical interventions of the issue. In
hospitals, parents are educated about sex education. They are given tips on how to control birth
rates, and this is a good thing since it helps them to know how to overcome unwanted
pregnancies. Thus, abortion rates go down. The medical consultants do the following for
families:
❖ Provide them education on sexual lifestyle
❖ Provide them tips on how to use birth control methods to avoid unwanted pregnancies.
These two are significant roles in ensuring the holistic health of the people in the community.
Treating one family is like treating all families. This is because others will learn from that one
particular family. I believe medical interventions could be better in society. They will shape the

lifestyle of the people. However, this solution only applies to adults: people above the age of
eighteen years. It does not sound right for a child to be given medical intervention on parenting
by medical professionals. However, there is a way of treating the issue for adolescents,
introducing courses that teach about sexual education. Teens need to be taught the truth about
sex at a young age so that by the time they are old, they already know what is right and wrong.
These courses have been introduced as part of course work in school.
Adolescents are the most vulnerable family as far as abortion is concerned. Statistics show
that adolescents are greatly affected by peer pressure (Reagan, 1997). For instance, it is this
pressure which makes them enter into relationships that lead to unwanted pregnancies. Due to
the fear of being driven out of their homes by the parents, they decide to go for abortion.
Nevertheless, most do not have a better understanding of the consequences of engaging in such
practices, and this exposes them to the risk of falling victims of this health issue.
