Description
The required theme for this assignment is IDENTITY Create an argument about language, culture, or closely related topic and its connection to identity. Then find research supporting your argument. Include one to two paragraphs about the opposition to your argument. A Good Research Paper Introduction Includes: State clearly in one sentence what the central argument/conflict of your paper is. State clearly what side of this conflict you will be advocating for. Clearly state what opposing ideology you will cover in your paper. The research paper has three stages: Inquiry, Research and Composition.* INQUIRY: Establish a line of inquiry. Choose a subject associated with identity that you find relevant, current, and attracts the concern of the community Example: What should we do to reduce homelessness in rural areas? RESEARCH: Find four RESEARCH articles that will help you answer your question of inquiry. Scan the articles’ abstracts first. This will help you decide whether or not an article will be useful for your goals. There is a difference between scholarly articles and articles found in most newspapers, magazines and online websites. SCHOLARLY ARTICLES INCLUDE: university or research institution publication peer review abstract expert author less than 10 years old Meeting most or all of these criteria will ensure that you are using a credible source. However, you may use one article that doesn’t meet these criteria if you believe it helps to support your claims, or will significantly engage the reader. COMPOSITION AND INTEGRATION: The first thing you want to do after you have collected and reviewed an appropriate number of articles is write a thesis statement for your research paper. This thesis statement should attempt to answer your question. Say for example my research revealed that federal funding for homelessness was largely concentrated in urban areas. Thus, my thesis might say, Sample THESIS: Solutions to the issue of homelessness are different for rural areas as compared to what works best for urban areas. Then, you’re going to “mine” your research articles for quotes that support your newly composed thesis. One to two quotes per body paragraph is plenty. Quotes should support your own ideas and feelings, not overwhelm them. Quote found that supports my thesis: “Rural areas succeed when they take the initiative to establish alternative housing and intensive case management aimed at assessing healthcare needs for their homeless populations…” Integration, using only what is needed, citation: A large percentage of rural homelessness is the result of untreated mental illness. Rural communities must provide “housing alternatives” and “intensive case management” aimed at diagnosis and treatment (Freeman, et al. 17). These steps will eventually lead to mental stability, shelter, and independence. *(when we are done, as a class, we will focus on formatting our papers and constructing our WORKS CITED pages). Keep this form with you while you write your research paper. Refer to it often and writing this paper should be a smooth and pleasant process. PLEASE TURN IN THE BEST DRAFT POSSIBLE. TAKE YOUR TIME AND EMAIL ME WITH ANY QUESTIONS. Works Cited (Links to an external site.) page is separate and does not count as one of the required number of pages.
