On June 30th Confederate soldiers entered the town of Gettysburg, PA in a desperate search for shoes. Supplies for the soldiers had been waning and as the war progressed supplies including uniforms and shoes were quickly deteriorating. The Battle which would begin on July 1st occurred by accident. The Union troops were unaware that the Confederate soldiers were in Gettysburg and they will passed through they made sure to remove the Confederate presence from the North. The Battle at Gettysburg lasted for 3 days ( July 1 -3, 1863) This was the bloodiest battle in American history, as it would leave a total of 7,058 soldiers dead. (3,155 Union soldiers and 3,903 Confederate soldiers). At the end of that battle, Lincoln would visit Gettysburg and give the Gettysburg Address commemorating those who died there. This is one of the most important Presidential speeches in history.
