One 100 point paper is required for this course.  You are able to choose from the following paper options.

Everyone should read this part:

For ALL Paper Options:

Each paper should be at least 7 pages long, not counting the title and reference pages (longer is OK).  All papers and assignments should be in 10 or 12 point type and double-spaced.  Make sure that you have the Option Type/Paper Focus, you name, and the date submitted on the title page.  Use the headings under each option as you write your paper (i.e.   1.  Documentary;   2.  Text Connections …). I will evaluate the assignments and papers by giving you points and feedback in the drop-box in D2L.

Avoid quotes- use your own words!  Be sure to cite all of your sources as you use them in the paper and also as full references at the end of the paper in APA format.

Note:  Most people will not need the following reminder- but here it is!:

I will only read 1 paper for each student.  If you do not do well on a paper, you cannot replace your grade by doing an extra paper.  If you miss the deadline for a paper (i.e. it was not in the Drop-box before it closed), you have missed those points.

Choose one of the following options (A-D):

Option A: Children and Poverty (organize the paper by using the section headings that follow:

  1. Documentary:

Watch Poor Kids (60 min long) (some brief ads may come on during this- sorry!)

Go to     http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/poor-kids/

(or http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1daxo1 if the above link does not work)

Between 13.4 and 16.5 million American children live in poverty. While the federal government has set the so-called ‘poverty line’ at $23,050 of income per year for a family of four, many of America’s poor kids live far below this line. The documentary follows three families with children over the course of a year. Long interviews with the featured kids are punctuated by shorter interviews with their parents, most of whom are unable to find full-time work and struggle to meet even the most basic needs of their families(http://www.popmatters.com/review/168096-frontline-poor-kids/)

Write about a 3 page summary of the documentary (avoid quotes-use your own words and give detailed examples from the documentary as you summarize what you watched). (35 pts.)

  1.  Text Connections

Connect the issues in the documentary to at least four different concepts from the text/class.  Give specific detail from the text/class and the documentary to make you connections clear. (24 pts.)

Summarize the article in your own words in at least a one and ½ page summary.  Then, connect the article information to the documentary and to the class concepts you have noted above. Give specific detail from the article, the text/class and the documentary to make you connections clear. (25 pts.)

(The last 8 pts. will be for writing clarity)

Option B:  High School Drop-out Risks and Prevention (organize the paper by using the section headings that follow:

Option C:  Death and Dying Issues (organize the paper by using the section headings that follow :

  1. Documentary

Watch the documentary Facing Death (54 minutes long) (some brief ads may come on during this- sorry!)

Go to http://video.pbs.org/video/1639625115/

In Facing Death, FRONTLINE gained extraordinary access to The Mount Sinai Medical Center, one of New York’s biggest hospitals, to examine the complicated reality of today’s modern, medicalized death. Doctors and nurses struggle to guide families through the maze of end-of-life choices: whether to pull feeding and breathing tubes, when to perform expensive surgeries and therapies or to call for hospice. The film also offers an unusually intimate portrait of patients facing the prospect of dying in ways that they might never have wanted or imagined (https://nfda.org/home-page-items/2241-pbs-documentary-on-end-of-life-care-airs-november-23.html).

(24 pts.)

  1. Assigned Article

Read the article found in the file “End of Life”  found on D2L under Content.  Summarize the article in your own words in at least a one and 1/2 page summary (include some specific examples).  Then, connect the article information to the documentary and to the class concepts you have noted above. Give specific detail from the article, the text/class and the documentary to make you connections clear. (25 pts.)

  1. Discussion

Finally, consider how you might make end-of-life decisions for those you care about (based on the documentary and articles) ? (8 pts.)

(The last 8 pts. will be for writing clarity)

Option D.   Student Developed Topic

If you want to develop your own paper topic, you will need to follow the following guidelines. (I would also suggest that you get my feedback from a draft of your paper at least 4 days before you put it in the Dropbox).

  1. Choose a specific topic related to Lifespan Development that you want to research.
  2. Do a general search for articles related to that topic to help you decide on a specific focus.  For example, you might want to research Reactive Attachment Disorder.  That is an interesting topic, but you will still need a specific focus.  For example, after you initial source search, you might decide that you paper focus will be on “Effective Therapy for Children with Reactive Attachment Disorder.”  Your paper introduction should include general information (and a general source cited) about why you chose your topic and focus, in your own words. (10 pts.)
  3. Now that you have your focus, find at least 4 scholarly articles (each at least 6 pages long) to review and summarize (avoid quotes- use your own words).  At least two of these articles must be original research, and will include a Methods and Results section.  Summarize and compare and contrast the articles.  This section should be 5 to 6 pages long.  Include complete citations of all of your sources at the end of your paper, and cite each source when it is used (using APA format) in the text of your paper.  (67 pts.)
  1. Connect your topic to at least 3 different concepts from the text/class.  Give specific detail from the text/class and the articles to make you connections clear. (15 pts.)

(The last 8 pts. will be for writing clarity)
