Satire is a humorous way of criticizing some part of society, especially if there is something wrong with it. Following this, satire contains three parts: humor, a target to criticize, and some kind of moral voice. Because of this, satire is not simply mocking or criticizing something, but instead must point out the flaws in order to instruct or improve upon what is lacking.

For this assignment, you will be creating your own satirical writing based upon a problem that you see at school. In order to do this, you will first need to find your target. This could be something as simple as having too much homework to something larger, like problems with schools not preparing students for the real world. You may either choose a general or specific topic, but you should avoid calling out specific individuals

Once you have your target chosen, you must decide if you wish to write from an optimistic or pessimistic viewpoint. This means that you either provide a solution to your problem within your writing (optimistic), or you choose to inform others about the problem in a harsh, bitter way (pessimistic). However, no matter which viewpoint you choose, you must maintain a moral voice by identifying how the target is lacking morals.

The final step is to criticize your target through the use of humor, specifically through incongruity, sarcasm or irony, understatement, and hyperbole. For this assignment, you must use all four types of humor and the humor should fit your viewpoint. MLA Format (header and title)
