Find letters to editor, editorials, op-ed pieces, etc. in which the author is trying to convince the reader to adopt a position. Preferably cut them out and tape them to regular ruled paper, and put the analysis alongside or underneath leaving plenty of space for my comments. The analysis is to be done as follows:
1) What is the author’s overall point?
The author may give several arguments to the same conclusion, or just a single argument, or may give a series of linked arguments in which the conclusion of one argument serves as a premise for another argument.
2) Give the conclusion of the specific argument you choose to analyze. It is acceptable to simply underline the conclusion.
3) State the premises (or the cases, if it is an inductive argument). If there is a hidden premise, you need to write it out. If the analysis is properly done (in the case of a deductive argument) I will be able to look at the premises that you state and draw the correct conclusion without looking at the article.
4) Label the argument as inductive or deductive.
Note that sometimes you have to reword what the author says to clarify the structure of the argument. If there are several arguments in a given piece, it is fine to analyze more than one.
