I strongly encourage you to START BRAIN STORMING with a Mind Map. This paper should be written version of a Mind Map in terms of content richness. Soon after seeing the play you wish to review, sit down and brainstorm–do not edit–get everything out on paper. Push yourself to see the BIG picture and the small, detailed picture and make grand connections. Set aside your Mind Map for a bit… or a day or two…let the ideas simmer…come back to it and discover ALL that you have to write about! A TITLE for your paper is a must–can you sum up your thoughts in a powerful title?
REMEMBER: You are responding to the production you experience…not just the script. Themes are great to talk about BUT you should focus on how themes are communicated through the work done by the artists involved in THIS PRODUCTION. Actors, designers(set, lights, costume, sound), director…..
This paper is not about “I liked it” or “I didn’t like it.” It IS about how we can examine Art: LOOK( what elements of the production stood out to you?), SEE (Describe what you experienced), THINK (why was this choice made? What does it tell the audience?) and CONNECT (what does it remind you of in your own cultural experience?) . Write with authority. You know what your experience was– write honestly and without hesitation.
