Professors instructions:
Your term project is a research paper using a Sociological method. The term project will be a minimum of 8-10 full pages and are to be typed double spaced using a 12 point font using MLA style. Grading will be based on the steps and process a Sociologist uses in their research. For the purpose of this project, the Method or Design will be Survey. NO EMAIL OR LATE PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED. Not all research studies follow the same pattern. There are steps, however, that are frequently used in the research process. Following are the steps you will use for your term research project. 10 points will be deducted if paper is less than 8 full pages.
1. Defining the Problem (10)
Defining the problem involves selecting a general topic for research, developing a Hypothesis and defining the concepts of interest. Narrow the topic to a manageable problem. For example, you may wonder how you will get your first job. On a larger scale, sociologists might ask how people in general find jobs, as Granovetter did (1974).
2. Reviewing the Literature (10)
In this step, you will try to find out what has been published on the problem. This is accomplished by going on line, reviewing journals, books, etc. already written on the subject.
A minimum of 5 references are required. These references should give the reader (those that read your paper) any additional information on the topic and are to be referred to within the paper itself.
3. Formulate the Hypothesis (10)
A Hypothesis is a statement of what you expect to find according to predictions that are based on theory. A hypothesis predicts a relationship between or among variables.
Ideally, in their effort to build knowledge, researchers develop several competing hypotheses. Durkheim (1897) did this in his classic study entitled Suicide. He considered the possibility that suicide rates varied as a result of heredity, climate, or social factors. He found social factors, such as the presence or absence of cohesion within a social group, to be the most important determinant of suicide.
4. Choose a Research Design (Method) (5)
How will you collect the Data?
For the purpose of this term project, the Survey method will be used. It must be stated in the paper.
5. Develop the Survey Questions (10)
You will need to develop your survey. Formulate questions. Closed-ended questions (yes or no) would keep the project simple. Ten (10) questions as well as ten (10) responses to your survey will be acceptable.
6. The survey responses should be attached to the paper. (5)
7. Operationalize what the words you are using in your Hypothesis. The Reader needs to know how the words are being used and what the meanings of the words are in order to get an accurate understanding of your research. (5)

8. Dependent & Independent Variable (10)
Make sure your Hypothesis has a dependent and independent variable. State them.
9. Collect the Data. (10)
Hand out the Survey to 10 people. Do not clarify any of the questions. Just ask them to answer them.
a. You have to assure the validity: That your definitions measure accurately what they are intended to measure.
b. Reliability is also important. Reliability means that other researchers will be able to use your operational definitions and findings will be consistent with yours.
10. Analyzing the Data (15) Include, date(s) of research and location(s)
It is here that you will review your data. You may find commonalities within your research that indicate a particular trend. They need to be fully discussed in this section.
11. Conclusion or Summation (5)
Restate your findings. Once you have completed your analysis you will come to a finding to share with others.
