Ideally, you should structure your paper in the following manner:
sources required
Newspaper/Online Articles (must be approved)
Nonfiction Science Books (must be approved)
with work cited page
Introduction
Thesis statement and brief information on the topic you’ve studied
Background
This section should focus more heavily on the information you talked about
in the intro (e.g., if you talk about rising sea levels in your intro, you will
elaborate on what constitutes a rising sea level, how it’s measured, etc.).
While you can organize this section however you see fit, it should focus
almost exclusively on the physical forces at work, i.e., the science.
Argument
In your introduction, you wrote a thesis statement, essentially stating your
opinion. Now, in this section, you will provide the data and research you
have found that supports this position. You will also include a concession to
your argument here, i.e., evidence against your claim or counterpoints (this
should be brief).
Discussion
You’ve made your argument based on the science and research in your
background section. Now, you will discuss current (or potential) solutions
and responses to the topic you’ve selected.
Conclusion
This is the wrap-up section. Here, you’ll briefly finalize your thoughts and
reiterate your thesis. The conclusion should be as short or shorter than your
introduction.
Thesis Statement
To develop your thesis statement, you will research your chosen topic and, in a sense, take a
stance. If your topic was Rainforest Loss, your thesis might be: The fires destroying the Amazon
rainforest have led to a massive decrease in biodiversity that rivals the magnitude of historic mass
extinction events, harming future medicinal research and disrupting the local climate in unforeseen
ways. The statement above will then guide your writing and additional research. You will focus on the
science behind biodiversity loss and the medicinal value of plants, while highlighting research that
supports your opinion.
REMEMBER THOUGH
your thesis statement can change throughout the research process. If, while
researching medical information, you find that the rainforest has no impact whatsoever, you should
alter your thesis to reflect that.
