SPREAD LOVE NOT HATE
On 22nd May,2020, Anti-Asian hate crimes were said to be increasing in the province of British Columbia. This news was confirmed by the Vancouver Police, who said that ‘Hate spreads like a Virus’ (Chow, 2020). Currently the police are involved with investigation of 29 cases since the Covid Pandemic hit BC in March. In comparison to last year there were 26 more cases than 2019 as there were only 4 cases at this point of time period in 2019. Along with the crime, people have also been targeting Asians and their cultural landmarks by writing hateful stuff at their important landmarks in Chinatown, by calling out insulting names to the Asian people which is very hurtful to their sentiments and very disturbing for them. Vancouver Police department’s deputy chief constant Mr. Howard Chow is leading the investigation and exclaims that this year VPD has had 77 hate related police files. The number has increased from 51 in 2019 to 77 in 2020. This increase is said to be linked to the corona virus emerging from the city of Wuhan in China (Chow, 2020). Since then there have been a number of racist attacks in BC aiming at the Chinese Canadians, especially after when the province of British Columbia declared as the state of emergency in March. There have also been some extreme cases like an indigenous woman being verbally abused because she was misidentified as a Chinese woman. Another woman was beaten up by a man since she stood up in the support for 2 Chinese women who were being abused by a man on a public transit. A 92 years old Asian Man was pulled and pushed out of a shop. An Asian mother of two children was approached by a man in public who terrified and harassed her and told her to not giving him her fucking disease. There were many more incidents in the last few months as well. On 13th of March,2020 a 92-year-old man who had dementia was found wandering into a convenience store near Nanaimo street and East 1st Avenue. When the staff of that store was trying to assist the man, another man started yelling racial comments about Covid 19 to the old man. The saddest thing is that no charges have been laid yet in any of the cases. Although the police department is worried about people who haven’t reported the hate crimes yet and are afraid to go out on the street. Provisions are being made for the Chinese to report their issues at 911 in Chinese.
I feel very sad for the Asian people. I belong to a different race, I am a South Asian and I have had some people call me brown and other racial comments in the public transit. These Racial remarks hurt a lot and they are very disturbing.
We live in a multicultural country where equality and liberty is the very basis of its foundation. It is against discrimination on the basis of sex, caste, race, gender. Yet there are a few cases which violate the law and create an uncertainty in the society. This news is one such news. This news is all about Racism. It is violating the rights of Asian people. It is questioning their freedom to live freely. Their rights and freedom is in danger. They have to think twice before coming out in public and enjoy the privileges like everybody else.
I don’t know yet how everything unfolds but it is definitely not right for the public to attack anybody from the Chinese race and fill them up with hate. The attackers of these hate crimes should be punished or fined to teach them a lesson and let British Columbia be free of hate.

CLASHES BETWEEN THE POLITICAL PARTIES
This news was published on the 20th of June in the Canadian Press by Journalist Joan Bryden.
In this news, the federal conservatives want the proper working of the Parliament to return,
but the new democratic and liberals have an issue with the Federal conservatives wanting to
resort to electronic voting in the midst of corona crisis
Candice Bergen, who is the conservative house leader claims that her party is suspicious of
anything promoted by the Liberals since that would keep most MPs out of the House of
Commons and, as per her it would also help the government avoid accountability. (Bergen,
2020)
Candice Bergan also wrote a letter to the Commons Speaker Anthony Rota, suggesting her
other ways to conduct in person elections. She suggested that proper traditional way of
elections could be done keeping in mind the strict rules of social distancing, another
suggestion was to make separate queues of MP’s for yes and no in the courtyard space
surrounding the chamber from where they could individually enter the Commons to have
their votes recorded. Other suggestions included options of small group of MP’s voting in
shifts or issuing paper ballots and allowing each party’s whip to “block vote” on behalf of
their colleague. (Bergen, 2020)
This news is basically that the conservatives are suspicious of electronic voting as they
suspect some ulterior motive of the Liberals. They feel that their powers will get diluted if
they won’t be present in Ottawa for the elections in Person.

On the other hand, government House Leader Pablo Rodriguez says that he fails to
understand that why the Conservatives have been so against one little change which in this
scenario is very important. (Rodriguez, 2020) This one little thing is a prevention from the
Covid 19 pandemic. Taking these precautions would allow the Commons to resume their
normal operations and restore all MPs’ powers, including voting, without risk for
transmission of COVID-19. As per Rodrigues, this would allow to bring back the parliament
in a very simple way and it would be the best for the democracy. He further adds that what
conservatives want is not practical since in person voting would mean all MP’S travelling
back and forth to Ottawa which brings everybody at a high risk of transmission of the virus.
(Rodriguez, 2020). The conservatives are the only one to oppose the idea of Electronic voting
and doing things remotely along with Bloc Quebecois. The New Democrats took the side of
the liberals and decided that things would not operate normally until a safe and a secure way
could be found to conduct elections electronically and not in the chambers.
Anthony Rota, the commons speaker exclaimed that he’s confident that electronic voting
could be done securely. He further stated that the all-party procedure and House affairs
committee has been instructed to recommend a precise procedure for doing so by next week
(Rota, 2020). While the decision to vote electronically could be implemented on a temporary
basis with the support of just one of the main opposition parties, Rodriguez said it would be
better if they could all agree but the Conservatives leader Candice Bergen said that they
won’t change their minds. She agreed that initially they were open to the idea of electronic
voting but over the period of time their party is just getting more and more suspicious.
As per my Point of view, Considering the pandemic and to conduct the affairs of the country
and keeping in mind the safety of parliamentarians, in this modern age, it is wise to do
electronic voting. We are in the 21st century and everybody is technology friendly. The
conservatives have a very different ideology and they have very conventional ways of

working. Secondly they are the main opposition party hence they are using this little issue to
create their superiority over their rival party. They are just resorting to petty ways to not
agree with their Opposition party. They are also very suspicious of any sort of cheating
occurring during elections but they are the only ones in doubt. I feel that it is not a good idea
to put other parliamentarians in risk to catch or come in contact with the virus just because of
the stubbornness of the conservationists I can’t see any solid reasoning behind their idea of
denying the online voting. They need to be more practical than of bring suspicious of the
other political party.
This news makes me realize the importance of Elections to run the country smoothly. Canada
is not Direct democracy but representative democracy. The central democratic mechanism of
the Canadian regime is Elections. There is so much Ruckus over conducing elections in these
not so good times.
As studied in class, Canada has a multiparty system and every party has their own ideologies.
If one party wins the second major party plays a crucial role in the opposition. It’s their right
to ask and question the decisions which the ruling party has made. They have all rights to
disagree to the laws or acts passed by one party. Since both liberal and conservative party are
a part of brokerage party system, they represent all ethnicities, minorities, areas and people.
They don’t have one single motive but many. Probably that’s the reason why Conservatives
are questioning the decisions of the liberals.
