I noticed that commonly missed elements were; effects of the disease on healthy body functions, risk factors and preventive steps, maintenance of quality of life, diagnostic and therapeutic tools, outcomes and prognosis, and current and future areas of research. Note that you may not have information on all these required elements. For example, if your topic is a rare genetically inherited disease, then the risk factor maybe unknown (it’s genetically inherited but other risk factors might be unknown) and it cannot be prevented. If you have done enough research and you conclude that there is not enough information on certain required elements, you still state it “gracefully.” In other words, do not just write “I couldn’t find information” but state it as if it would appear on a pamphlet that you’d see at your doctor’s office. 🙂

1. Introduction
   1. Definition: meningitis is swelling or inflammation of the protective membranes that cover the spinal cord and the brain
   2. It is a bacterial/viral infection of the fluid that surrounds the spinal cord and the brain leading to swelling (Hasbun, van de Beek, Brouwer, & Tunkel, 2020).
   3. Bacteria, viruses, fungus, parasites, ameba, and head injury cause meningitis
2. Signs and symptoms
   1. Pain in the muscles, back, or neck
   2. Fever, malaise, fatigue, and loss of appetite
   3. Blotchy/red rashes
   4. Nausea and vomiting
   5. Severe headache, seizures, and sensitivity to light
3. Effects of meningitis on healthy body functions
   1. Cognitive issues and seizures
   2. Learning difficulties in children
   3. Trouble with concentration (CDC, 2020)
   4. Swelling may interfere with senses
   5. Loss of sight and vision issues
   6. Paralysis
   7. Joint stiffness/arthritis
4. Meningitis risk factors and preventive measures
   1. Age: teenagers, infants, and young adults are at increased risk of meningitis
   2. Group setting: spreads in large gatherings of people
   3. Certain medical conditions such as HIV and persistent complement component deficiencies
   4. Prevention
      1. Vaccination: meningococcal vaccines
      2. Antibiotics: chemoprophylaxis
