The paper will argue a point of analysis on two works of short stories. You could discuss: Common themes in the works, How the author’s life or events from his or her life are present in his or her works, How the works fit within a historical context, The appropriateness of the work’s genre or literary genre functioning within the works, Similar writing style, or The works in relation to a literary movement. You will need to submit an annotated bibliography with Works Cited entries for the sources. These sources must be books, e-books, or journal articles from our North East Lakeview library databases. (let me know if you need my user and passcode for the Northeast Lakeview Library Databases) Make sure to use these in essay: THESIS- A specific and clearly stated controlling idea (or thesis) –THESIS RELATES DIRECTLY TO PROMPT AND PREVIEWS ORGANIZATION (points and argument are clear OPENING & CLOSING -There must be a fully developed introduction and conclusion. The conclusion should not go on into excessive detail. GENERAL – Topics must be fully developed with concrete and vivid detail (this includes development of the paragraph’s point and the paper’s overall point). All paragraphs must contain accurate examples from the text that connect to the point. TOPIC SENTENCES- Topic sentence transitions, must establish paragraph’s point and connects back to the thesis. Choose one of the prompts below to write an essay at least 3 pages in length (not including the Works
Cited Page).
1. All of the following short stories deal with the plight of the woman and how she is often times at odds
with the roles she’s expected to play. Focusing on one of the short stories, how does the author critique
and react against women’s roles and misogynist tendencies in the society in which they live? Examine
the way these stories criticize the way men utilize their power to determine/limit/control the woman’s
identity.

2. In the following story, the present setting is very influenced by the past and older values. Focusing on
O’Connor’s short story, write an essay in which you show how O’Connor explores the relationship
between the Old South and New South. Questions to generate a thesis: How does the past or values
from the past influence the characters in the story? How do characters seem to go against the values
they think they uphold? How does the past figure into the setting in which the story takes place?

3. Explore the author’s use of setting in one of the following stories. Questions to help generate ideas:
