PROMPT ONE
Write about an experience in which you failed at something you really wanted to do, but then capitalized on that failure by strengthening your skills and meeting a similar challenge later on. Be very specific with your details and descriptions. Vague generalizations are not helpful or appropriate.
PROMPT TWO
Why do people fear the “other?” In what ways do people reflect that fear? Recount an incident when you were afraid of a person because he/she was different. Was the person’s speech or gait or facial expression odd? Was his cultural background foreign and therefore, intimidating to you? How did you react? Be very specific. Do you think you engaged in prejudice or were you just fearful of the unknown? What is the difference between these two attitudes? Expand and be specific.
PROMPT THREE
Write about the first time you defied your parents. When did it happen? How did this occur? What made you defiant? In hindsight was this a good move? Was this a positive move toward independence or merely a lashing out at parental authority? How did you mature from this event? Was it a learning moment for you? Do you regret your actions? Why? Why not?
PROMPT FOUR
What has been the most difficult aspect of college for you this year? What have you learned about yourself and your approach to college work? Do you feel ready to tackle the next year at college? What makes you say this? What do you still want to improve? What connection do you see between your life outside college and the atmosphere in a college? How have your critical thinking skills broadened?
