Each answer should be 2-5 paragraphs in length. There is no maximum limit, but answers shorter than two paragraphs for each question are unlikely to earn a Complete.

Late submissions will be accepted until 6 pm on Monday, May 4, but a loss of 5-15 points will occur for papers submitted after 5:15 pm. (Note — even though you have the rest of this semester to complete this exam, it is highly recommended that you don’t wait that long.)

There are four questions on this exam:

1. Gary was arrested with 5 grams of Meth. Missy was arrested with 500 grams of powder cocaine. The two people receive the same sentences. How is this possible? Why is this unfair?

2. A commission is established here in the U.S. and it seeks to look at the amount of money that is being spent on incarceration for drug users when so few of those drug users end up getting off drugs as a result of going to jail or prison. What principle is this? What other principles might this commission consider?

3. How can we be a nation that simultaneously “Turns a blind eye to addiction” and yet also focuses intently on addiction as a reason to punish? (Meaning, what reasons could exist for America to have gotten to a place where we spend so little money on drug treatment and so much money incarcerating people who don’t get treatment?)

4. This question involves your critical thinking — the answer is NOT in anything that was posted on Canvas or discussed in class. You are NOT expected to cite, but you can. Thinking about everything you have learned, should there be more strict regulations on, or even some criminalizing of, the making and supplying of pharmaceutical drugs — if no, why not, and if so, why?
