Writing Assignment:
As you have learned, experiencing CSA (Child sexual assualt) can disrupt youths’ ability to
relate to others and to successfully manage emotions. It can also lead to emotional problems like anxiety, depression, anger, impulsivity, or shame which can, in turn, impair learning and interfere with victims’ school performance, as evidenced by learning difficulties, declining grades, difficulties with concentration and attention, and poor peer relations. Children expend a great deal of energy coping with trauma of sexual abuse, which may reduce their capacity to focus on their school work and master developmental tasks. In the classroom setting, this can lead to poor behavior, which can result in reduced instructional time, suspensions, and expulsions. Long-term results of exposure to violence include lower grade point averages and reduced graduation rates, along with increased incidences of teen pregnancy, joblessness, and poverty.
For this assignment, research the professional literature on “trauma-informed schools” and make recommendations on what can be done at school to help CSA victims. Helping Traumatized Children Learnis a very helpful website containing videos and reports.
