1- CHARACTERISTICS OF MEMOIR (Dissertation)

1.1 THE CHOICE OF SUBJECT

IPAGs memoir is a very practical work able to respond to a management problem that can be met by companies or respond to current social and political issues. It can be related to the professional project of the student.

 

The subject has to raise a problem. It is not necessary to propose a subject & a problematic at the same time. It is recommended to choose just a subject which raises a problem & interests the lecturer to go through the report to find the solutions to this problem.

 

The students are required to define their subjects in correlation with the NEWS. That is why students must rely on careful observation of the environment, on reading the daily economic and scientific newspapers
The subject is offered by the student, discussed and validated by the appointed guardian for their memoir.

 

 

1.2 THE GENERAL STRUCTURE OF MEMOIRE (Dissertation)
Master level, the memoire becomes more analytical and less descriptive than the Bachelor. The transition from a descriptive process to a process of strategic analysis requires the memoir structure to include the following steps:

– Identify a topic of study
– Perform a synthesis of literature (the existence of the subject)
– To state the assumptions of study
– Adopt a research methodology
– Conduct an empirical research based on the study hypotheses
– scientifically validate the hypotheses of study
– Conclude with a critical approach

The main text, excluding appendices, should be between 30 and 40 pages, without the use of non-relevant  information for filling space. The submission must indicate:

The name of the author,
The name of the research councils(tutor),

1.3 THE ELEMENTS OF SUBSTANCE
In this part we will specify each of the elements outlined in paragraph 1.2. which will constitute the general structure of the memoir.

1.3.1 Defining a subject of study

This is the most difficult part because the choice of the subject determines the overall interest of the memoir. A good subject must:
– Join in the field of management
– Be innovative
– Engage the business world or world events
– Motivate the student
– Be temporally controllable
– Be testable

1.3.2 Conduct a synthesis of literature (the existing market)

The synthesis of literature must bring together key texts already published on the subject chosen by the student. Master level 2, the synthesis of literature generally includes thirty references (10 academic books, 10 articles professionalizing nature, 10 scientific articles). The student is required to write a broad summary of the literature. Throughout the synthesis of literature, references should be related to the problematic of the memoir which appears as a guide line. The synthesis of literature must also indicate systematically the sources used by the student.

1.3.3 Formulate hypothesis (Assumptions) of the Study
At the end of the synthesis of literature, the student should state the study assumptions, which are variations of the problem. The number of hypotheses is ideally between 2 and 6. These are questions which should be answered by YES (validation of the hypothesis) or by NO (invalidation of the hypothesis)

 

1.3.4 Adopt a research methodology
In the second part of this submission, the student must choose an appropriate methodology to the chosen subject and its assumptions, the student must then be able to justify his or her choice. Amongst the methods most commonly used are (in order of increasing difficulty):
– The interview method (Qualitative survey)
– The questionnaire method (quantitative survey)
– The Economic Theories studies in the Great Economic Organizations (French Centre of Foreign Trade, Chamber of Commerce,……)
– The companies case studies analysis

To realize a good memoir there is no need  to choose a complicated methodology. The interview method is very effective in many situations. If this method is chosen, the student should conduct interviews to achieve saturation. This saturation usually appears after 4 to 5 interviews. The choice of respondents is crucial to the continuation of the study. We must of course select the “experts” of the subject that we wish to base our dissertation on.

 

1.3.5 Conduct an empirical research based on the study hypotheses

Once the research methodology is chosen, the study should be conducted. This means that the student has to collect the data necessary for its study and treatment. For example, the methodology of the interview can help to:
– identify people (experts) to meet
– seek appointment
– Create a structure for the interview,
– conduct interviews,
– Analyze the interviews.

1.3.6 Validate the hypothesis scientifically study
The analysis and comparison of various interviews (if applicable) will help remove the hypotheses, that is to say, validate or invalidate them.

1.3.7 Conclude with a critical approach to performance
The third and final part of the memoir must enable the student to express themselves freely on the approach used and their results. This is the critical analysis of what the student learned from the literature and what they discovered through their own investigations. Unlike Parts 1 and 2, which are very mechanic, the third part is very creative. The student must present their work through demonstrations, analytical charts, diagrams, graphs, images, … … ….

1.4 THE ELEMENTS OF FORM

1.4.1 The protocol writing
The written document must be formatted to satisfy the following:
– font = Times New Roman
– number of pages 30 to 40 pages without the annexes
– character = 12
– line spacing = single
– margins left, right, top and bottom = 2.5 cm
– formatting paragraphs justify =
– pagination begins on the first page of the introduction
– five heading levels up (Part 1, 1, 1.3, 1.3.2, 1.3.2.4)
– two levels of enumeration maximum (dash and dot)
– quotations must be quoted and referenced at the bottom of page
– minimal use of parenthesis in favor of the reference at the bottom of page
– graphs, tables or diagrams should be numbered, have a title and their sources should be indicated
– notes can be inserted at the bottom of page. They must be numbered in the footer and the text.
– annexes are not intended to make the volume. Their presence is necessary only if they provide important insights from the text.
– annexes should be classified by themes. It should be numbered and listed in the main text
– Spelling must be flawless

 

1.4.2 The graphs, charts and diagrams

They must be preceded by the title (bold, font 10) and followed by the source (italic, font 10). The numbering of the graphs is separate from the tables and figures and settled in Arabic numerals.

It is not necessary for an explanation of a chart, table or diagram to be indicated in the footnote of a page, but they must be under the object. Do not write: ‘see table below diagram’. For example, use of the following is preferred: ‘see Table 2’, ‘see Figure 5’.

 

 

1.5 THE  REFERENCE CRITERIA

1.5.1 References
Bibliographic references should appear in footnote page. They can also be cited as follows: (Hate (1998), Hate T. (1998) Tom and Hate (1998)). When the reference has more than two authors, only the first will be given followed by et al. in italics: (Dupont et al., 2003). When several references are cited together in the text, they should be ordered chronologically: (Smith, 1986, 1989, Anderson and Smith, 1990a, 1990b, Anderson et al., 1995, p. 250-282, p. 327-349) .

1.5.2 Description of references
Generally, priority should be given to the most recent publications, but older references can be cited when they provide a historical perspective and the theories they set out remain valid.
If the author of an article or book is an organization, you must write his name in full and not abbreviated.
References should be listed in alphabetical order the names of the first author and in chronological order for the same author, in the following forms:

1.6 THE PLAGIARISM
Plagiarism should be distinguished from the quote, which is a practice condoned and commonly used. “The citation consists of the reproduction of a text written by an author, which is explicitly given with reference to the source, using quotation marks and footnote page. Plagiarism, is essentially copying whole sentences, without using quotation marks or citing the author a note. “Remember that plagiarism act punishable by law, may lead the student to the Disciplinary Board of  IPAG ending by an  exclusion.

2- ORGANIZATION OF RESEARCH TRAINING

2.1 THE GENERAL SCHEDULE
–  A Masterful course of Research Methodology, by Dr. Negar Terrany
– Students should provide their guardian (tutor),by e-mail, the first choice of the subject of thesis and its problems & the general Summary (PLAN).
– Regularly provide the tutor, by e-mail, with documents containing the progress of the students’ research.

The student is the only responsible for the progression of his memoir. The role of guardian is only to advise the student in their approach, not to participate actively.

 

An electronic copy of the dissertation should be sent to tutor at the deadline date announced for the program and a paper (hard) copy to be submitted or sent by POST at the same date, to  Dr. Negar Terrany, Dissertations Academic responsible.

 

Failing to meet the deadline for the submission of the thesis will result in a penalty applied to the students final grade (unless valid proof is provided for a catastrophic event such as: a traumatic event or hospitalization, ….).

 

Any memoir that fails to meet the required standards will pass through re-site procedure with  Dr. Negar Terrany. The work will be taken from the beginning and should be completed quickly to get diploma on time, otherwise, there will be no guarantee for that.
