The paper will need to follow traditional essay format. The purpose of writing is:
1. To organize thinking. Writing a coherent essay requires the writer to organize an argument that carries the reader through an idea from beginning to end.
2. To persuade. Every essay must be written from a point of view. The writer uses language to convince the reader of the value of that point of view.
If you choose a performance form that does not produce a script, consider how the work interacts with more traditional theater practice, or with the culture at large. Examine the historical record to immerse yourself in the thought and archives that relate to your topic.
• Significant historical events, economic, social or political changes.
• Changes in the life of the playwright or of those close to her/him.
• Changes in theater practice or technology.
• Encounters with other artists or significant individuals.
Photos, diagrams, etc. may be included but captions cannot be used toward the word count.
You must note quotations. Either footnotes or end notes are acceptable. Quotations cannot account for more than 10% of your total word count. Quotations that run for more than two lines of text must be condensed according to this example:
You must use “quotations” when you are using language borrowed from another source. If you are paraphrasing the source, but not directly quoting the language, you still must use footnotes to indicate the source of the idea. Not using footnotes to cite sources is plagiarism. Plagiarism will result in your failing the class.
Each paper must be accompanied by a bibliography.
