Answer all of the questions. The goal of the exam is for you to show that you have learned a broad range of material from second semester. How you go about answering the questions is up to you, and we will be very open to many different approaches. The key, however, is that you must draw specifically and concretely on the course readings and lectures, and explain theories, concepts, or examples in detail.
In answering the questions, be sure to follow these criteria:
• No outside sources of any kind can be used; focus only on the course material.
• You do not need to provide references or a bibliography. Simply refer to the authors you use by name in your answer.
• Write in full sentences and paragraphs.
• In the instructions below, when you are asked to use ‘at least 3’ or ‘at least 1’ reading, each textbook chapter counts as one reading. So, for example, you could use 2 chapters from the textbook and 1 other reading as your 3 sources.
• Normal plagiarism guidelines apply to this exam. Submitting the same work as another student is one serious form of plagiarism, and any instance will be penalized severely.

Answer ALL of the following 3 questions:

1. Government policies play a central role in shaping the media landscape in Canada and elsewhere. Using at least three course readings and concepts, explore what you see as the most significant policy debates and interventions relating to one of the following areas:
   a) Indigenous media and culture
   b) Public Service Broadcasting in Canada
   c) Media imperialism and globalization
   d) Intellectual Property Rights

2. We have looked at a variety of perspectives on how we understand technology. Chapter 6 of the textbook argued that ‘constructivism’ is perhaps the most convincing approach. Drawing on chapter 6 and at least 2 other course readings, explain how constructivist approaches understand technology, and use this approach to explore ONE of these issues:
   a) algorithms, automation, and surveillance
   b) the environmental impact of media technologies
   c) labour

3. What do you see as the most important media-related issue or problem in Canada or the world today? Drawing on at least ONE course reading, explain this problem and briefly outline how you think we might address it. NOTE: The readings for the week of March 16, which look at activist responses to media issues, maybe be helpful to use here, but they are not required.
