Throughout the Application Assignments in this course, we’ve seen a few of the places where we can nd linear
algebra ideas { systems of equations, vectors, matrices, etc. { in other contexts. In this project, you will look
at an application of linear algebra of your own choosing. This project is to be done individually.
Whatever topic you pick, your project should include:
ˆ a short introduction to your topic
ˆ an explanation of how linear algebra comes up in your topic, or how it is used to solve a problem there
ˆ at least one worked example using linear algebra in the context of your topic
You have three options for how you would like to present your work, through:
ˆ a paper (probably around 3-5 pages),
ˆ an academic-style poster, or
ˆ a video (probably around 3-5 minutes).
A more specic rubric will be available soon, but the categories on which you will be marked are:
ˆ demonstrated understanding of topic discussed (is your writing/video vague, or can you get into specics?)
ˆ soundness of mathematics done (is the math you have presented correct?)
ˆ clarity of communication (this is less about your grammar and more about whether you can get mathe-
matical ideas across clearly { would another student in the class be able to follow your explanation and
understand what you have written/said?)
ˆ organization and presentation (is your work presented in a logical and organized manner?)
ˆ eort (is it clear that you put work into your project?)
You are expected to maintain academic integrity standards by properly including your references. If you are
writing a paper or poster, please cite the ideas that are not your own (you may use whatever citation style you
prefer, as long as you are consistent throughout the project). If you are submitting a video, please include some
indication of where your information came from at appropriate times { the easiest way to do this may be to
submit an outline or script for your video with your citations included there. All projects should include some
form of bibliography.
You’ll get more out of this project { and enjoy it more! { if you choose a topic that is of interest to you.
Linear algebra is everywhere { if you do an online search of \linear algebra” along with a topic or subject you’re
interested in, you might nd something you want to look into further that would be a great project topic for
you. You may also revisit a topic from an application assignment, but if you do so you will be expected to dive
deeper into the topic than you did on the assignment. Some topic ideas are given on the next page.
Here are some ideas, but you are not limited by this list! Find a problem you’re interested in learning more
about, and ask yourself \how might linear algebra be involved here?”. You can also look at the applications
at the end of each chapter of the text for some ideas (we go up to Chapter 8 in this course), or you might
nd ideas by looking up \linear algebra applications” in your favourite search engine, or something along those
lines. Again, another good thing to search is \linear algebra in x” where x is a topic that interests you (\linear
algebra in economics”, \linear algebra in music”, etc.).
