News Article critique

This paper relies on news articles to analyse information relayed by media sources when informing the public at large during the COVID-19 pandemic. From the Guardian’s newspaper, the publisher wrote how President Trump argued that in line with the COVID-19 virus guidelines, re-opening the economy was the ideal option (Daniel, 2020). Through the article, Trump saw it necessary to regulate the measures put in place for fighting the pandemic. He wanted the lift on curfew orders to be enacted, schools to be re-opened with the assurance of guaranteed social distancing as well as gatherings summing up to fifty persons to be allowed. The article was about the president’s daily briefings on the COVID-19 pandemic. The publisher in his article further quoted Trump saying that “the issue of lockdown will result in the depression of the economy besides giving rise to other public health challenges.” The article displayed Trump’s administration guidelines of reopening the economy to be against those of state governors in response to the pandemic. The article revealed that only 29 states were in the game to mainly fighting the pandemic but not for the sake of re-opening the economy as alluded by the president.

I think the publisher’s news article as published was persuasive and I loved his passion for ensuring the citizens of the USA are informed. However, with the virus being a concern that needed quick response world-wide, I wished the writer’s article would have covered more in educating the public on the effects of the virus and how best to fight it through individual and government interventions. I feel the publisher got it wrong in publishing the president’s intentions of reopening the economy during this period. The publisher in his article should have focused more on articulating the guidelines that would help curb the spread of the virus instead of stressing more on the issue of reopening the economy as the president’s main intention. It would have been wise to publish articles that positively capture the efforts of the government towards fighting the pandemic rather than to publish such an article that could have drawn Trump and his government towards the negative side among the Citizens of the USA and the rest of the world. In my view, the publisher’s article negatively misinterpreted the president’s intentions of reopening the economy to be his sole purpose instead of first fighting the virus. In other words, perhaps the publisher should have said much about how prepared the state was in combating the pandemic.
