Video Analysis
In a typewritten, double-spaced, 3-5 page essay, discuss one of the following two topics:
Keeping in mind the passages we read from Gloria Anzaldua’s Borderlands / La Frontera, in addition to the video texts we viewed by Ile-Ife Okantah and Katelynn Duggins on code switching, what do you think Anzaldua means when she refers to “code switching”? Take some time to carefully define and think through what it means to “code switch.” As you do so, take into consideration both your own experiences with code switching as well as other examples you might be familiar with. Is code switching, as Katelynn Duggins suggests, essential to survival? If so, how so? If not, why not?
Focusing on language, discuss the relationship between identity (national, cultural, or otherwise) and language? What influence does our language(s) have on our identity? Explain.
This paper must include the following features: 1) a clearly defined thesis situated in a well organized introductory paragraph; 2) a series (usually 5-7) supporting body paragraphs, each organized around a clear and coherent main idea; 3) a concluding paragraph that refers back to your thesis. Additionally, this essay should include a heading, a title, and a “works cited” sheet or bibliography (make sure to consult the Online Writing Lab for formatting information).
When constructing this essay make sure to integrate at least three (3) sources from class into your perspective.
The first draft of this assignment is due Monday, December 2, 2019. Make sure to email a copy to your instructor and bring at least one (1) print copy to class.
