Human Resource Management

SCOPE AND OBJECTIVE

Adapting to changeable business environment is essential for a successful organisation. The concept of “learning organisation” was invented in the 1980s in which organisations are expected to experiment with new ways of conducting business in order to survive in turbulent and highly competitive markets (Senge 1990). The learning organisation approach allows for human resources synergies to deal with challenges. Therefore, the Human Resource Management (HRM) unit must play a new role of helping organisations shift from their old shells to new ones. In fact, HRM should strive to provide various ways to help people within the organisations to achieve the five disciplines of “Personal mastery”, “Mental models”, “Building shared vision”, “Team learning” and “System thinking”(Senge, 1990).  Some useful strategies for HRM to adopt are listed below:

  1. Personal Mastery: Since HRM is also responsible for hiring employees, it would be important to find out if new employees truly love their jobs and willing to learn new things about their jobs. It should recruit people who have positive working attitudes that would lead to the creation of a better work culture. In addition, to help employees know themselves better, HRM can give personality and interest tests & self-analysis lists. By doing these, people will find it easier to handle their limitations and difficulties, and deal with organisational change.
  2. Mental Models: For the purpose of training their minds, HRM can provide the staff with EQ classes. In addition, it should ensure the reward system is fair to encourage employees to be more open and positive to things and colleagues and be willing to learn and accept new challenges.
  3. Building Shared Vision: For the purpose of building shared vision, HRM needs to promote two-way communication and the sharing of information through company newsletters so as to foster shared vision, commitment and mutual understanding.
  4. Team Learning: For the purpose of team learning, HRM needs to provide on- the job training and initiate interesting group activities or projects to give the staff the chance to work and learn together. Through these activities it makes it easier to develop self and team awareness, encouraging group learning and enhancing team creativity.
  5. System Thinking: For the purpose of helping people think more systematically, HRM needs to develop guidelines and procedures on problem-solving and decision making for employees. In addition, it should establish effective mentoring system to provide guidance and counselling to newcomers to adopt the culture of the organisation.

You are required to conduct an interview to identify how the five disciplines of Learning Organisation have been implemented in a school / a university / any learning organisation.
