Working in the field of Human Services often requires motivating your clients. For this assignment, complete the following:

Step 1: Create a hypothetical profile of a client and/or family that may be challenging to work and communicate with. Include information about the client and/or family and why you are providing them services. Your hypothetical profile should be 2 – 3 paragraphs in length.
Step 2: Develop a plan to work with the client and/or family in your hypothetical profile. The plan should be 1 -2 pages in length and thoroughly explain:
Techniques on how you will motivate the client
Strategies on how you will help them develop intrinsic and extrinsic motivation
Resources that you would suggest for them

Emotional Intelligence is the ability to recognize feelings, to judge which feelings are appropriate in which situational, and to communicate those feelings effectively.

Emotional intelligence consists of qualities that aren’t assessed by standard intelligence tests:

Being aware of your feelings
Ability to recognize and empathize with others’ emotions
Awareness of the impact of our expression of emotions on others
Dealing with emotions without being overcome by them
Not letting setback and disappointments derail you
Channeling your feelings to assist you in achieving your goals
Being able to understand how others feeling without their spelling it out
Listening to your feelings and those of others so you can learn from them
Having a strong yet realistic sense of optimism

MOTIVATING PEOPLE

Understanding individual motivation in the environment contributes to conditions that encourage people to work harder and develop higher levels of motivation.

There are two main motivation types: Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation.

Intrinsic Motivation is motivation that is driven by an interest and exists within the individual. It brings an inner sense of fulfillment, enjoyment, and pleasure and is driven by focusing on improving one’s level of skill or competence at the task. Intrinsic motivation fosters greater and longer term task enjoyment, and also provides persistence and resilience to keep us pushing onward when we experience failure.

Fostering Intrinsic Motivation:

Use rewards to inform, not to control
Set goals that are specific, challenging but achievable and positive
Create conditions that support people’s values and preferences
Exercise creativity in work
Extrinsic Motivation comes from outside an individual and is driven by the pursuit of external rewards such as money or praise or the avoidance of punishments. It is driven by focusing on a specific level of achievement.
