ANTH 205g Introduction to Global Studies & Overseas Research
Each student will sign up to open and play a leading role in 2 class discussions in the semester. When more than one person is to present on the same day, you may (though you are certainly not required) choose to coordinate your presentations. This assignment has 2 parts:
PART 1) Response paper (3 pages):
DUE @12 noon the day of 5pm the day BEFORE your teaching contribution on Blackboard / Turnitin.
Each student must submit a short essay that engages directly with the readings for that class, addresses a topic or issue that you will present that day in class discussion, and shows how this discussion topic relates to the readings for that day.
This assignment is a great opportunity to really dig into a text, or explore new ideas. To come up with something really interesting and engaging for the class, be sure to give yourself enough time:
Read (1st pass). Plan to finish a few days early.
Make notes (2ND pass). Go back through the readings and make notes. Look for statements that summarize the author’s argument, and type up specific quotations that struck you.
Take a break. Gather your thoughts. If you know the material, your gut will lead you. We are always most compelling when we are engaged with an idea or a theory that really interests us.
Frame a question or problem came up for you in the readings. Dig into the text to develop your question further.
PART 2) Teaching contribution:
Each presenter will deliver a brief (maximum 6 minutes, not including class response), extemporaneous presentation drawing attention to a key theme or problem from the readings. At the conclusion of your presentation, you should pose one or two discussion questions for the class. Your aim should be to prompt a thoughtful discussion that also engages different perspectives. For the remainder of the class, each presenter will continue to participate as a key discussant in the broader conversation.
This is an extemporaneous presentation: you may refer to notes or the course text as needed, but you may not simply read from a piece of paper!
Your grade for the teaching contribution part of the assignment will reflect your grasp of the readings, and your openness in engaging the comments, critiques, and alternative readings offered by classmates. Bring your insights and ideas, and come prepared to act as a primary conversant in a lively conversation!
Present your question or idea in broad and accessible terms for the class.
Explain how your question is tied to the text. (For example, you might discuss one or two examples from the text that you found relevant.)
Each presenter should speak for 4-6 minutes. Failure to refer to the reading, or simply to speak for an adequate amount of time, will result in a failing grade for this assignment.
You may use notes, but you should not simply read from your reflection paper.
