Primitive vs Civilized
A definition of primitive is “relating to human society at a very early stage of development, with people living in a simple way without machines or a writing system:” (https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/primitive)
One definition of civilized is “having a high state of culture and social development.” (Collins English Dictionary)
Based on the definitions above, do you think referring to the 1st Virgin Islander settlers who migrated from South America or from other islands as primitive, is valid? In other words, must a group of people possess “machines” and writing to be considered civilized? Provide specific examples as to why or why not?
Contrastingly, the Europeans who enslaved, took the resources of, and exterminated the 1st settlers due to better weapons and their diseases, are considered as being civilized. Is this valid? Why or why not?
